Hi guys (and gals)....

Normally i spend my time in the 'spinny' section, but had a woman at work ask me yesterday "what's the best wood to use for a kitchen worktop.."? I said oooh off the top of me head i'd say beech, as in if it's good enough for a butchers block etc. but then also said oak due to it's 'liquid' resisting properties etc.

Any or all offers welcomed....

Answers on a postcard to ..... me :p

Seriously, cheers in advance.....

We had maple worktops made for our kitchen some 12 years ago. Still as good as new.

I occasionally cut them back with a bit of wet and dry and then re danish oil them. Nice and easy, low maintenance.

Beech is 'affordable' and machines quite well but, it isn't as stable as maple or oak. Creating the top by gluing up a number of narrow staves (as the manufacturers commonly do) might help to improve matters, though.
