Quick question
Which chop saw has the best depth of cut, I need it for beams and logs. The cuts must be very clean.

Depends on the depth of cut you actually want to do, you won't find many (If any) chop saws that will cut more than a 5" continuous thickness of timber. If you're only cutting 4-5" beams a regular 12" saw should do you, they're all pretty much the same aside from small differences which everyone bickers over so I won't say what saw is best as they all cut timber. It's the blade that makes the difference and pretty much ALL blades that come with any chop saw are not very good so it's best to invest in some decent blades if you want good cuts, Freud make decent blades for the general everyday work but if you want something more special you might want to look up CMT or Omas which make more industrial quality blades rather than trade quality.

I can't fault the blade supplied with the makita. Cuts through 4 inch oak with ease and leaves a glass like smooth finish.

+1 on the makita supplied blade. The only downside of my makita - a 200mm non slider - is that it kicks like a mule on start up. It has a brake but no soft start.

+2 on the Makita blades.

Other way round for me RE the soft start. I used to have a Makita LS1040 without soft start but with brake and now have a LS1018L with soft start and brake. I think I prefer the non soft start especially doing multiple cuts and having to wait for the thing to spin up...
