Hey all (you mucky lot)

I seem to be juggling lots of jobs at once at the mo. Took a few snaps of some bits I've made for the bedroom over the past couple of months and this wknd.

Built in cupboard with sliding doors.

Really pleased with parts of this and disappointed with others.
Built the frame first and made it absolutely square (rather than just bodging a load of bits of wood to the wall like I normally do.)

Routed two grooves for the plywood doors to run in. Screwed the whole thing together square.

I then put it in place, added a few small shims round the edge and screwed through these into the wall (screwing through the packing pieces meant that the frame did not distort and stayed square).

It has only had an undercoat (thats swmom's job) so looks a bit rough, but the doors slide as smoooooth as silk (that'll be the bees wax stick again ;-))

The only issue is one of the doors has developed a really nasty bow. Both are cut from the same sheet of ply but the other is still dead straight. I'll try adding abrace to the back of the warped one.

Not sure about those mitres on the moulding either :?

Oak Mirror Frame

Got this really nice piece of mirror from freecycle and made this frame from some oak lengths that I also got from freecycle. Actually, I dont think this cost me a bean! The mirror is lovely and flat, no wobbles or distortion you get in cheap glass.

Very simple lapped joints on the corners cut on the bandsaw using my kreg fence and micro adjuster to get it just right. Sanding sealer and chestnut 22. Pleased with this one.

Hanging Pegs

Swmom and I seem to be pretty untidy in the bedroom. Clothes often dont get hung up when taken off and I got sick of it.

Got this off cut of pine floorboard from when I laid the floor in our living room.

Ripped to width on the bandsaw, cleaned up the edges with a block plane and spokeshave. Using one of the bits I ripped off, I created the pegs using the spokeshave.

Gave the whole thing a very light sand and left the spokeshave marks.

Screwed to the wall with some steel slotted screws and its a winner!! LOTS of brownie points. ;-) Screw heads aligned too. Although I'm going to turn them so they are horizontal. Dont ask me why, just think it'll look better.

I'm going to update my thread on the dresser top I'm making now but hope you enjoy these.

...And there I was, expecting to hear that you had hand-cut those joints!

Very nice work all round. It's is surprising what you can get on Freecycle, sometimes. Never come across any oak though! :)

ha yes, I'd just got my kreg fence and micro adjuster when I did these and couldnt resist trying it out. Can really make some fine adjustments with that.

The oak was from a place called Emmaus I've posted about before. I think they are all over the country (homeless charity I believe). The one in St Albans started a wood reclamation business. They got loads of hardwood from a joinery firm and had too much to keep so gave loads away. It was all about 1" - 1 1/2" square and up to 14ft long but much of it was bent, warped and I also got there late so mostly gone!

I've had loads of other really nice bits of them (which I had to buy) since then. The lid of the oak box I made (still not sure what it is), the oak that all of this is made out of and this stool as well.

They only seem to have pallets and MDF now though as the joinery firm went into all MDF stuff so I'll have to find my wood elsewhere.

I've found freecycle a great source of wood - huge pieces of furniture past their best, but great for stripping down and re-using the wood.

Now all I need is a van to collect more!

Your gaps in your moulding are a common problem with architrave, I've found its normaly down to shrinkage. The only way i've found that works for me, is to let the timber get seasoned in the house for a week or two then cut and glue the mitre(its probably been stored outside at the B/M). :)

the same is also true of ebay - ive just today picked up a solid oak dining table i got for a tad over a tenner , as i told swimbo when she questioned why i had a table in the back of the car , "thats not a table , it a piano stool and two ocasional tables in disguise ;) "

by the way , who needs a van ? it is stunning what will fit in a focus estate with the seats down  (though i do have access to a D22 king cab pick up from work for the really big bits)
