I got started on my next project yesterday. This is a floor standing bathroom cabinet in painted MDF. This time it is for my sister and yes she is paying me for it. After cutting all the pieces out I put the Domino slots in and rebated the sides for the back panel. then I gave all of the edges a coat of sealer ready for a finish.

On this one the plinth is a little unusual so i had to make it up out of two pieces after moulding one piece on the spindle moulder.

I lashed these with the sealer as I want to hide the joint. After two attempts at cutting some shelves and placing the Domino slots in the wrong place! I gave up for the night and went home. this morning I went in afresh and cut the two shelves correctly this time. :D then had a dry fit of the parts.

By the end of the day i got the back panel cut out and everything ready for a finish. :D

Are you using MR MDF & standard MDF? I can see the green and brown stuff. Any reason for the mix if so?

Yes guys, the sealer is Zinnser bin which is a shellac based paint. I brush it on any machined parts and edges then sand it down with 150 grit before priming. Mr Yorke, all of the material is MRMDF just different batches of the same. The one that looks like the normal fluffy stuff is actually green in the centre. They were all from the same supplier but it depends on what stock they have at the time. The all over green one is Medite but I am not sure of the make of the other.

For best results in maching 18mm MRDF - for instance, profiliing shelf edges, what would you recommend - I am going to be making some shelves and as they'll be painted I am not going to use timber. I had considered edging with poplar then machining that on the router table but if good results can be had just with MRMDF then its a lot quicker and easier.

If doing it in MRDMF only, do you machine in several passes and then once done, cover in sealer, then sand down, then undercoat/topcoat?

Thanks

Mark has said it. Zinnser bin. rout the detail, usually in one pass, then dust off and brush on the Zinnser bin. let it harden for a couple of hours then sand well with 150 grit. It will then be ready to prime and paint. I usually spray prime and paint but you can brush of course. HTH.

I only said it coz you said it first, sooooo if it doesn't work its all your fault
  I have total faith in it as I have now used over 5 ltrs of it and can't fault it.

After a lot of sanding and painting I got the cabinet together today. :D

I have now got the drawer box to assemble and the runners to install and then it is finished. I just propped the drawer front in place for this shot.

You may have noticed that the plinth has changed! Well after taking another look at the photo my sister gave me it appears that the plinth was flat and the curve on the bottom was a badly taken photo with a blur which I took to be a curve! I will hold on to the original one I made as it may come in handy for another job in the future.

Very nice.

What primer & topcoat did you use? I've got got a couple of projects in the pipeline and don't want to waste money on duff paints.

Cheers
Stu

Thanks Stu. I always use Morrells 2K solvent primer and paint. I have heard the water based stuff is good too but not had the courage to use it so far.

That's a great project.

We all know the work that goes into something like this but I am always amazed how some folk think this is a 'quick job' knocked up in an hour or so.

Really nicely done and a good design.

Alan

I was one of the people recommending water based and it is good but I went back to Morrells 2K after having problems with bloom on darker colours.

Very nice job. Must not show this to SWMBO or she'll add another job to the long list of things I've not got round to. My last bathroom cabinet was similar-ish and is still in the out-house awaiting finishing/fitting/burning/re-use

What a little corker! excellent design and proportions and finish! (Not that you need me to say that).
I may just copy that! Regards Rodders
