I have just bought a Barrie Irons overhead router thing, kind of nicely built, (i have already typed a long description out and it blanked, so I am sick of it now) and I know nothing about it.
It's 3 phase, so will need to change the motor, but other than that it is all ok.

Anyone know anything about 'em, or how I can 'bastardize' it to make it into an overhead router? I think it could work myself, but will be interested to hear from you.

Thanks

NEil

The router you have got is probably a drain slot machine used in the window industry. The company went bust some time ago but I can probably help with some spares can you post a picture. Is it a single head, usually they will have 8mm collets but that can be changed. Let me have a list of questions and I can try and get you some answers from some friends I know who service machines used in the window industry.

Cheers

Russell - your avatar had me flicking the screen whilst thinking where the bloomin' dog flea powder was!!

Russell - PM sent

Russell got it spot on, I got it from a window firm, and it sort of looks like a condensation groover. The movement on it is great, and covers about 300mm x 500mm, I think. It moves on x, y and z axis, so it has potential. It has two levers, and is single head. One lever moves the head around the x and y axis, and the other is the plunge bar. All lovely movement. And if you put a template under part of the machine you can set a pin to slot into the template and follow it, thus copying said pattern. I think I like it, a lot!! That said it may well end up stuck in the corner for years, rusting! I paid 50quid for it, which I guess means it is of little consequence either way (not that I can afford to lose 50quid). I am torn between changing the 3 phase to single, and using the belt drive, or mounting a router on the end of the bar and using that direct. I guess the belt is the way to go, eh?

Wizer - I will take some pics tomorrow. I think you will like it. It makes me wanna make guitars and stuff!!!

Cheers all

Neil - being pleased with himself for sussing out the camera/picture posting thing, has started a new thread when he should have continued this one, perhaps a moderator can sort my stupidity out. I am sorry.

Cheers all

Neil,

Unfortunately we don't appear to be able to join two threads together. [-(

Just carry on in the new thread. 8)
