Hi Guys

Fell a bit of a fraud as i've not posted on the forum for a while.
Anyway I have question relating to banjo's, my lathe is the Axi 1000 and comes with the banjo and extension arm with various tool rests. My problem is when I attempt to turn a bowl more that 4" deep I have great difficulty in getting my assortment of rest to gat close to the bottom and side of the bowl.
I know I'm missing a technique or tool that will sort this out. Si if you can help I'd appreciate it.

Just use the 300 or 400mm at an angle into the bowl centre.

One think to also consider is the angle of grind on your bowl gouge. Stuart Batty does some excellent (if slightly lengthy) videos on YouTube and Vimeo on bowl gouge geometry and use. He illustrates that sometime having a rest in the bowl is of limited additional value depending on tool geometry.

In short, a bowl gouge with a 40 - 45 deg nose bevel is fine but you’ll also benefit from one with a 60-70 deg bevel for the transition / base of deeper & steep sides bowls.
