I've just been to B & Q for some door handles, while I was there I thought I'd buy a piece of 18mm X 34mm x 2.1mtr pine, there was one out of a pack of eight just sat there waiting for me, it had no barcode on it except the one for the pack of eight..so I grabbed it and off to the checkout I trotted. At the checkout it took three people ten minutes to decide how much to charge me for it.........one said " well it's £8.29 for eight so we'll charge him £1.05p  now I'm not tight but if you multiply £1.05 by eight it comes to £8.40 so I said " NO" if it's too difficult I'll leave it here  they ended up charging me £1 as an offcut. WHY DOES BRITAIN TREMBLE ??

B&Q in Craigavon has now got customer-operated checkout posts. It only takes about three times as long to put the stuff through as normal and I generally only need to call an assistant to reset the machine errors three or four times.

And...I get to work for B&Q for nothing.

Yes, noticed they've got them in Bridge of Dee B&Q yesterday. Went in because son-in-law said they were having a clearance (well, you never know, there just might be something useful, and we were in the next door Sainsbury's anyway). Found one or two marginally good value things, but there was only one staffed checkout. So an assistant had to come and operate the self service thingy, because none of the sale stuff was appropriately barcoded, and even they had problems telling the machine what was what.
"Efficiency", my foot.

to be fair i was quite chuffed to pick up a whole load of sanding belts for my ryobi for £3 for a pack of 3 ( I bought four packs 2 in 40G and 2 in 80G) and packs of 5 125mm discs for my Ros for £2.47 ( again four packs 2 in 120G and 2 in 240G) in the clearance at the swindon B&Q

I hate those self service checkouts. Apart from having to do B&Qs job for them, what really gets my goat is 'please put your item on the tray' after you swipe anything. Even a 100 litre bag of compost. How the hell am I supposed to put a bag weighing 30 kilos that just fits into the trolly onto a tray 12 inches square  Then you have to wait for the overworked underbrained assisstant to cancel the stupid machine which is still bleating 'please put your item in the tray' over and over and will not let you swipe anything else. Grrr.... hate, detest, loathe.... shop at screwfix in preference now, provided I remember to go the day before the day I actually want anything as they need to 'order it in for tomorrow sir as we don't have any in stock'. Can you tell I had a bad day today.. can you?

Steve.

Yes I agree, we have Toolstation and Screwfix right next to each other. However, there's something about walking around and picking things up and looking at them that you just can't beat.

I rarely use those self service checkouts. The more you use them the more likely they are to keep them. The ones in the supermarket are always going wrong.

No choice in B&Q Craigavon, the ordinary tills are always closed. I've even gone to the service desk to ask to pay for stuff there but I'm directed to the robots. I had enough the last time I was there so now I buy elsewhere.

i bought my first bargain from b&q on tues...

i was thinking of reracking the work van out as my job has changed slightly so the van is now in need of changing slightly too (stock and access to more different tools etc)

so i was in there for something for the garden and i saw a pallet of kitchen end panels etc with 10p a panel on them. they are the kind that are used as trim pieces for boxing in fidge freezers etc... 2m tall 600 deep and most of them were beech effect.
thought they would do so was gonna get twenty...
member of staff can over asked if i was taking all of them as he wanted rid for other stuff that was going on offer...

long story shorter he gets pallet truck takes whole lot to trade counter. discounts every panel to 3p... (cept an oven housing that still said £40)
so that it wouldn't be more than the £2 i was gonna spend...

took 20mins to load the van.
counted up at home...

23 beech panel
10 victorian cream/white
2 oven housings 2m tall mahog
3 std doors
5 other panels... 1birch 1oak and 3 scratched white...

total bill...

£1.28

could use as fire wood for that money lol

Popped into the big orange shed at Glasgow Airport, just because I was passing. Picked up Freud 300mm 30mm bore TS blades, £2 each. Check out girl called her Supervisor, "because there's so much off". Turns out whoever wrote the price tag missed a digit off, but they honoured the price for me :) Wouldn't let me go back for the rest tho' :(

I must confess that I prefer the self service check outs if I am just buying small stuff. I just wanted some strimmer cable this weekend and it had been so long since I had been into B&Q that this was my first introduction to the self service checkouts.

Given that it normally takes a good 15 minutes to get through the check outs at B&Q, getting through in 2 was a considerable improvement. I don't know what it is about B&Q till staff, but they are the slowest anywhere.

Of course if you use the self service checkouts then you feel obligated to scan everything. Normally the check out staff miss one or two things; I have even had them forget to scan 6 200 litre bales of compost before.
