Wandering around my local B&Q store yesterday - looking to buy some cupped and twisted softwood  I was distracted by the cheap and cheerful own brand power tools. On a stand in the corner was a rack of Bahco chisels (- set of 3 414-S3- EUR 12, 18, 25mm) priced at £9.98. Even though I am awaiting a delivery of 2 cherries I just could not resist. My reasoning - at just over £3 per chisel I could afford to hone (no pun intended) my sharpening skills and have a set for rough work. Interestingly these chisels were not on show in the main tool section. Cannot find a cheaper price on the web most quote £20

Hope somebody finds the info useful

Tony

Cheers Tony,

I've head the Bahco's are one of the better budget ranges, I could do with a rought set for outdoor work, i'll keep an eye out.

I bought some Axminster even cheaper cheapos. Basically perfectly OK except not very nice to look at and handles a bit bulky (could get in the way of a paring cut).
Bahco should be a lot better. You wouldn't gloat over them or impress anybody (except me  ) but they'd be OK if all you want to do is a bit of woodwork.

cheers

My word, i've set of the galoots again, I must remember to stop poking bears with sticks :)

More billhooks resources than I could have ever wished for. (Although, some how I was interested enough to learn that some very early examples upto 2k years old were found in essex, wonder if its worth me getting my shovel out and see what I can dig up.)

Nice find tony

Bacho make pretty decent quality engineering tools and they invented the standard adjustable spanner (J. P Johansson, 1892) that everyone is so familiar with. They still make the best one in my opinion

I noticed from Alf's link that billhooks were often sharpened with a double bevel. I wonder what sort of jigs were used all thos years ago to achieve this.

"Begger it" Byron you have called my bluff and caught me out, don't have many I'm afraid Nick W mentioned a good one I used to use all the time Rowlocks - that is when the kids were younger - until they started copying.

:)

Tony, you have reminded me of one I used as a kid: Swollocks! Apparently, it has something to do with a girl called Betty?

I'm sure I've got a reference to 18th century bear-poking sticks somewhere :)

Funny thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if you were serious :)

And you would probably have information on the correct sharpening of said bear-poking stick :)
