Hey all,

The ANC man came today thanks to an order into Axminster. Having contracted an unhealthy addiction to hand planes I bought a number 8 LN from Axminster given their 10% off offer a few days ago.

Sure enough it came today (with some festool stuff) but sadly it's in a sorry state.

The box was quite bashed up and it came with the blade mounted in the plane and it's cut through the bag and box and is now "serrrated". I could have sorted that out but the top on the handle has snapped off too.

Bit gutted as wanted to use this weekend, but looks like is going to have to go back. Given the state of the box (pre going in the shipping box) I am surprised nobody thought to check it out. What are Axminster like with returns?

Brilliant.

Cheers,

Seconded. You have to go a long way on this forum (or anywhere else for that matter) to find someone with a bad word to say about customer service at Axminster.

Update, they are good.

Popping down tomorrow to swap over.

Bit worried as me in that shop will be like Homer Simpson in Krispy Kreme.

I had exactly the same problem, briken handle on a no 7, broken - I presume - in transit, changed the next day no messing about. APTC customer service really is very good though as I've said a million times before it's a shame they get so much practice. It does rather put one off larger purchases.

Cheers Mike

It was a bad idea to go to Axminster.

Ended up coming away with a couple of LN's, no 8 and smoother (no 4)

Spent a while today trying to flatten a 2.6m plank, never used a plane for anything like that, god it's hard work, no need for gym today.

Now that sounds like a good day out. You found The Slope TM well greased then.

Much better for you than the gym, fit and nice smooth timber as a bonus.

Of course we do need pictures of the shavings to check that you are doing it right.

Yep, well and truely hooked.

It's damn hard work I must say. I ordered the BoB C DVD on rough to ready and he only has a little board to do. I haven't really ever done before so got a pretty good result apart from an area around a knot in the timber that's been tearout galore.

Will post some pics, got some good even shavings. before I used both I did take the blades straight to an 8000 stone to get a mirror finish bevel and also to round off the edges a tiny bit.

The no 8 is just awesome, it's going to be a godsend for when I make some doors and some larger scale stuff that my PT can't handle in the current sized outhouse I have.

Axminster really is like Homer going to visit the birthplace of Duff beer and donuts. The guys are really helpful and it's a real shame other companies don't have this level of service. You should go down and check it out, but make sure you have space in your car, or you won't be able to fill it up.

At the end of the day I think it's proof that those companies that do offer very good service are more successful than those that only see pounds as an immediate issue.
