I reckon Bakewell would be a good compromise, halfway between Stockport and Ambergate

Its nearly on my doorstep! Wonder if they will do some 10% off or something on opening day?

Rutlands would just love that!

Might get them to smarten their act up a bit!

Something has got to be funding all these new Axminster openings.

Now cash from the banks is tight, so it must be coming from all us punters??

Make you think eh?

Makes one think indeed, but not necessarily what Bob was thinking.
Does anyone remember Tabwell Tools, who used to be in Bakewell and then had a similar spree of opening branches here, there and everywhere by taking over local outlets? I think they lasted about a year after spending all the money........

It could just be that they've be planning to expand for some time and, with the R-word and the demise of many smaller business, perhaps this has provided the best series of opportunities for Axminster to buy up these empty stores...? :)

Seems to be a popular business model.

I don't know if BriMarc bought Axminster or the other way round but clearly some capital has been found from somewhere.

Screwfix got capital from Kingfisher group ownership and open outlets all over the place.

Toolstation went in with Travis Perkins and did the same now Axminster.

Good luck to them as long as they don't come too close to me for the sake of my wallet!!

I do remember Tabwell Tools - at one time they had 3 shops in Bakewell within about 300 yards of each other, which I never really understood. I didn't realise they had shops elsewhere as well. Excellent selection of stuff though. I believe the guy who owned that went on to start Toolbay.net which had some good deals but didn't last long. Uppertown Tools which followed Tabwell was never quite as good, the guy who ran it was a right miserable tw*t - now thats more or less gone as well.

Would that be the shop on the corner Ed that used to sell kitchen stuff a while back?. I popped in there a couple of months ago enquiring about some Jap saws on display, felt as welcome as a f*rt in a space suit :? .
I`m coming to Baslow in a few weeks don`t suppose Rutlands have a showroom at all or is it all postal stuff?.

I don't remember Tabwell Tools but a quick Google reveals that they had shops all over the place.

Interestingly, their head office appears to have been in Rutland Square, Bakewell.

Some connection? I don't believe in coincidences...

I remember boggling at Tabwell's Festo prices
Then shops appeared everywhere
The reveivers auctions went on for months in Southend-on-sea

Yes thats the one, although it used to be on the other side of the road.

No shop to visit at Rutlands, its just a mail order office and warehouse.

It does seem unlikely to be coincidence for a small town like that to have 2 specialist woodworking retailers, having said that I don't know of a connection.

My memories of Tabwell tools was buying a boxed and numbered Calvert Stevens plane from their store in Bakewell. this was twenty years ago and I have to say at the time no other store compared apart from Buck and Ryan in Tottenham Ct Rd. They also did regular deals/special offers on marples chisels etc

Was in Bakewell Mid July, the shop now sells walking/climbing gear however there was another tool store in the island formed by the small one way system in the centre of town. prices were horrendous though

I have been told in the past that Rutlands used to be Tabwell, though i don`t know how true it is. I presume when Tabwell went t:ts up rutlands came out of the ashes.

Tabwell tools..thats it, I've been trying to remember their name. Bought a bandsaw from them 12 years ago and some Marples chisels. I was working for an IT company at the time. The chap that owned the company/group I worked for would buy a business/dealership, keep the branches which were working, strip the others of their assets and then close them down - thats how he made his money. Since everything he bought was IT based I was surprised when he bought Tabwell Tools, but not so surprised when they virtually disappeared overnight....!
