Hello
One of the jaws on my Axminster chuck was out of line, i took it apart and corrected the issue.

BUT I cannot get the four screws back in on the back plate, see photos, they just will not engage the threads.

Does it have to be in a certain position/indexed?

Must be something silly.

Please help as i am completley stuck.

Thanks

What model chuck ?
What was out of line ?
What did you take apart ?

Can't envision anything on a chuck being out of line that would require disassembly to the point that you would have problems re-assembling, the jaw carries can be wound out of the scroll without any did-assembly which are the only item I can envision may have been fitted in incorrect order.

As you are a new member you can't yet post images but if you make a couple more post in this thread you will be able to upload some that may make it much easier to help your re-assembly.

ok, will do.

One of the jaws was not closing in unison with the other three, i just too opened it up and took them all out and re assemble and they were ok and closed together.
Thanks

whilst figuring out what to do I took the 4 screws off the backplate and now they will not go back together.

Its got to be something really silly.

Thanks

Sorry, I dont know model just says Axminster.
Roger suggests turning the plate from hole to hole as only fits one way.

Will try this and report back.

Thanks

It like like a clubman chuck. On the other side of the backplate are there two small ball bearings? They need to line up with the holes in the back of the chuck I think?

If it's 4" it looks like the original Axminster Woodturner's chuck which preceded the Clubman chuck.

The four socket headed screws on the back hold on a threaded insert which can be changed to suit a lathe with a different thread.

The carriers are numbered & engage in order 1,2,3,4. If I remember correctly the carrier slots aren't numbered so using any slot, find the start of the scroll, back it off so that it clears the slot, push in the carrier & rotate the scroll. Make sure it has engaged the teeth of the carrier. Repeat with the other 3 jaws.

If you can't find the numbers on the carriers, turn them teeth up. No1 carrier has the first tooth nearest the centre & it gradually moves back till Carrier No4 where the first tooth is furthest from the centre.

The jaw numbers are not important, they can go on any carrier & still be concentric but of course it is less confusing to keep them all the same.

Joy of joys, I got it back together, all good.

Ready to turn my first practice pieces now.

Thanks again all.
