Woden, you may be getting a little mixed up. Here is the rest i'm talking about:
Axminster version Which is £26.19

The Veritas one: Clicky Comes to £43.37 as you have to add the straight jig, the actual rest itself is £31.49

The axminster price included the rest and the straight jig for the £26, so it's a lot cheaper than the trend and looks to do exactly the same thing.
 
Just caught up with this thread again. I can highly recommend the Veritas tool rest and straight jig, though I haven't tried Axminster's own one so I can't compare. The difference in peripheral velocity between 6" and 8" wheels, at 1250 rpm is 10 m/s for the 6" and 13 m/s for the 8". So I make that about 25% slower. Why did the Axminster guy say you would have to remove the guards when fitting a smaller wheel, surely only necessary if fitting a larger one?
