For wood turning tools I really like my Axminster Ultimate Edge. It has variable speed and forward and reverse.
It also uses a 12mm support, the same size as the Tormek and other wet grinders. This means you can use all the jigs from Tormek, Jet, Triton etc.
Wet grinders are great if you’re not removing too much material, otherwise they can take ages. This is no doubt why Tormek sell an adapter to use their jigs on bench grinders.
The advantage of belt grinders though is that you can use a huge variety of different grit belts, all changed within a few seconds. With other grinders you’re stuck with one or two grits. I use 60g to 800g on my machine.
If you only do flat work then a wet grinder is probably the best bet though.
