AT406 Or Record Envoy/Regent

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a new lathe and have pretty much narrowed my options down to Records new Envoy or Regent and the Axminster AT406.

I am keen to seek feedback from those who either own these models or may have either been lucky enough to have seen or used both to compare build quality etc.

I will primarily will be turning bowls so the option to rotate the headstock and turn outbound or the capacity to mount a lower bed extrnsion to the tail stock end is a must.

My budget is in the region of 2k so if anyone can suggest somthing i may habe missed with similer capacities I would welcome.e the suggestions.

I have also been looking at the Twister FU-180 however the Twisters capacities are slightly less which is putting me off this one

I have said for a number of years that the Record Maxi is the best value in this class of lathe even though the price has risen by £200 .

Hi, I am also thinking of upgrading my lathe, I currently have a Record CL2.

I am also thinking about a Coronet Regent/Envoy, Axminster AT406WL or Stratos Fusion 230.

Record Regent has 2Kw motor with 1.5Kw at the spindle, the others only claim 1.5Kw, so I assume this is at the motor?

The Record Regent has 18" swing same as Fusion, but more than At406WL at 16", so Regent seems the best buy as it is slightly cheaper, or am I missing something.

Not much written about Record Envoy/Regent so hard to tell.

I ended up buying a Jet lathe and I like it a lot but if I were to choose from the ones you have mentioned I would probably go for the Envoy and spend the difference on either tools or accessories etc. I'd have like to have seen the Stratos 230 in the flesh but with lockdown it wasn't possible. I was drawn to the Stratos for a few reasons but mostly because of the customer service and support provided by either of the UK stockists. In the end the deal I got on the Jet lathe was too good to pass up.

Sold my last lathe before a house move (that ended up taking nearly two years!) and had plenty of time to consider what I would replace it with once settled.

I was not impressed with the build quality/finish of the Axminster models I saw in their showrooms and had settled on the Record Maxi. Also the after sales service from Axi seems to have taken a nose dive recently? Then Record brought out the Envoy and Regent and I was sorely tempted but found that there was insufficient information about them (ie downloadable manuals) for me to be comfortable committing to the spend.

In the end by the time we finally settled in our new home, I was able to make the budget stretch to the Stratos FU-230 with extension bed etc. So far this has exceeded my expectations and I am just loving it!
