Ash Planking

Hi there, i work in forestry (Shropshire)and have some ash butts that were felled in the winter. Some of these butts are good enough for planking, as we are getting a mobile sawmill onsite in a few weeks anyway i just wondered if anyone on here would be interested in purchasing any of it.

It can be cut to whatever sizes you want (max 2ft x 12ft) but needs to be collected undried as we have no space to dry it out.

hi, we are based on Wenlock Edge in Shropshire, about 10 miles south of Shrewsbury. It is a Woodland that is owned by the National Trust.

Will find out prices ASAP, if you can let me know what dimensions you would be interested in i can give a more accurate price. The mill is onsite on the 11th June so could do with knowing if you want specific sizes before then.

as (principally)a turner i might be interested in any offcuts between 6" square and 12" square (min 2" thick) - or possibly in some planks 6' x 12" x3" depending on price. (if any of the trees feature the darker "olive" ash figuring then i would be articularly interested in these if the price is reasonable)

being undried doesnt bother me as i would rough down in the green.

I tend to mainly use 1" thick boards and a length that will fit in or on the car, 4 to 8 foot. Width wise I am limited by the planner, but I can always rip to a size that will fit.

Ok guys, i have spoken to the boss and he says that the price is negotiable. As we work for a charity we need to cover the cost of cutting the timber whilst making a little bit of money. if you can pm me with the price that you would normally to pay for your required dimensions and then hopefully we can meet somewhere in the middle, so that everyone is happy.

right, we are looking at a cost of £10 per cubic foot, sorry for being so vague before but we haven't had any to sell for a long time!!

It sounds interesting, my only concern would be planking during the hottest months of the year.

Most material i buy fresh sawn tends to have been planked in the winter months.

That aside, any clues on the size of the butts? i know you have given the 2' 12 foot as a guide but is this more down to the limits of the saw{ a small forester} if so do you have any big lumps you might be billet sawing?

Always keen to buy good stock and i would take away complete butts if the price and quality is right.

Perhaps you can give me some more detail.

Doing a calculation and comparing it with seasoned stuff say at £30/cuft -
and say a round trip of 400 miles @ 40 mpg you would be saving money with a purchase of more than 3 cu ft?
But then if you price in your time, storage and not being able to use for a couple of years???

Tempting - but it's a long way from Hampshire and I only have a car?

The price from my local hardwood supplier - £18.75 for a cube of seasoned (ready to use) ash. I would have thought green would have been cheaper than £10 ?

The price i was quoted was £30 per cu ft dried, therefore by selling it at £10 undried seems fair, any cheaper than that and its not worth our time getting it cut, might as well use the mobile sawmill time (1 day) to cut more planks of bird box wood which to be honest is a better earner. The only option left then for the ash would be to sell it as posh firewood. Just thought that as it is decent quality ash that we have felled for a change it would be nice to see it being used for a better purpose.

£25 to £30 per cu ft of dried ash seems usual to me. In fact a quick check on Yandles site

http://www.yandles.co.uk/planks.html suggests £26 to £36 depending on thickness.

£10 per seems fine to me. If I were closer I'd certainly take some of your hands But then I'm at least a 7 hour round trip away with out thinking about cost of Van hire so not really realistic for me.

fairly local - 25 mins drive and I can sort through the pile.

if you are paying £30+ then yes , £10 is a good price, but for me paying less, the drive and drying time doesn't make it such a good deal !

absolutely not as you say, but then Ive never seen seasoned ash at £18 - I need to get out more I think
