Are these Marple chisels worth £50?

Hi,

Apologies, this is the second post I'm making about chisels and I don't quite know the etiquette of forums.

I'm looking at some quality second-hand chisels as a beginner. I've seen these on eBay - "vintage 1001 Marples chisels set" for about £50. Some surface rust but it doesnt look too bad. Do these look sufficient? Or am I better saving my £50 for elsewhere?

We're talking wood turning chisels here. The're a bit on the small size, unless you have a mini lathe. but okay for small spindle work. It equates to about £ 8 a tool, which in the great scheme of things doesn't amount to much.

I tend to find "meatier" chisels than this a lot more useful , but then the prices will be far, far, higher.

I bought a set of three of this sort from a market stall way back when I first got into turning. Never used them, bought longer and meatier ones instead.

I've been caught out too - buying a parting chisel which turned out to be really tiny!
If they don't tell you the size they are hoping to rip you off.

I just didn't know any better at the time.

A little expensive I think but they are in box etc

I have a number of wood turning chisels in similar condition, let me know if of interest I’ll get some photos together over the weekend

Yes I would buy those at price, I started with a set like that and like others I have bought bigger set
However, the flip side of that’s I am doing small fine work so I have gone back to the smaller tools. The only bigger tool used in all these is the roughing gouge to get from square wood to cylinder
