Firm plastic (like tupperware, not completely hard), each with a small hole that goes roughly 50% through.

Should I be capping garden canes, modelling DNA, or what??? They were with my Dad's tools.

Beads to make an abacus or something..

See original post "each with a small hole that goes roughly 50% through". I am not sure they would slide along the abacus bar like that.

I have seen similar large red ones on brass-encased thermometers used for taking the temperature of concrete but that is unlikely to be correct.

Beads I think. If they are hard likely acrylic (can also get soft silicone as well), half hole type. You can do all sorts with them, bracelets, keyrings etc , apparently......

When I laid some slabs, they came with 4 of these moulded one into each corner such that they would not lie completely flush with a hard surface.
I winkled them all out and used them in my catapult to dissuade the magpies from destroying the song birds' nests in our hedge.
Yes, I have got a catapult, after all I'm nearly 9 3/4 now...

Yes, some peeps just don't read proper, what, with half holes and all. Aside, not common in a woodworking shop, so Dad must have got them for a special job (like jumbo knitting needles) or just came across them at a junk sale and thought they may be handy??

Well I can imagine a scenario. Insert item/retailer of choice!

‘I need a couple of <x> for this project making a <y>.Being thrifty, I’ll look around for something about right.
<Hardware emporium> used to have them, but of course there are only 3 on the shelf and I need 4.
Joy! A pack of 50 costs less than the petrol getting to the shop. I’ll get a pack of 1mm too small and a pack of 1mm too big, and make them work.
Job completed, it would be a waste to throw them out. Even though making a <y> is unlikely to be done again, it was a daft idea anyway. They can be filed away neatly just in case.’

For similar reasons, I have a LOT of 12mm spring locking washers….
