Hey Guys

anyone on here from cambridge area or newmarket area suffolk.

If so where do you source your wood supplies from. I am just thinking of starting to get into doing some stuff. Mainly looking at building some toys and stuff for my son. Would rather not have to get my timber from places like homebase etc. I know there is a reclaim timber place in cambridge i just found. Anyone used it???

Thanks for any help

James

Well I am on the Norfolk Suffolk Border just outside Diss but am afraid I don't use or know of any merchants I can recommend in or around Newmarket.

If you fancy a run up to Snetterton on the A11 you have got Burtons, Aldridges, and Meyers all within spitting distance of each other. Near me at Diss is Gorrod Timber too.

I know they are off your patch but home this helps

When I'm in England I sometimes call in to Woollards in Mildenhall, they do stock timber but mainly supply the kitchen / bedroom refit trade. Clive Woollard is a helpful old gent from the 'old school' I like talking to him even if he doesn't have what I want :)

What's the name of the timber re-claim place in Cambridge :?:

hey.

thanks for the replies. Snetterton is not all that far down the road. we do go there everynow again go around the market and go look in the model ship. I do rc model boats when i can. which at the moment isn't often.

I know woolards in mildenhall. Brother lives there. Didn't even think of it. Never popped up in any of my searches on internet.

As regard to reclaim place in cambridge. Its call Cambridge WoodWorks. They make stuff as well as selling reclaimed timber. Mainly softwoods. although they do say they get in hardwoods from time to time.

You can also try Witnesham Saw Mill just on the otherside of Ipswich heading towards Thetford/Diss way. Peter there is a very nice old gent and helpful too. They mainly do English Hardwoods like Oak, Ash, Walnut, Lime, Cherry.

Well they wouldn't 'cos I don't think they've got a web site, I did say the boss is from the 'old school'

They do have some timber, rough sawn and PAR, but their main stock is sheet material for the kitchen / bedroom fitters.

Thanks for the info on the Cambridge firm.

James, I live in Haverhill and when I've needed hardwood I've gone to Colchester for it - thorogoods ...http://www.thorogood.co.uk/products.php I've not found anywhere closer. For softwood and veneered MDF I just go to my local timber merchant and they order it in.
I would like to find somewhere in Cambridge /Newmarket /Saffron Walden area.

The last project I did (toy box in AWO - WIP on a different place) I bought the wood from Moss and Co in Hammersmith as it was convenient from work (yes long commute!)

James, I used and would recommend these stays http://www.eurofitdirect.co.uk/heavy-duty-lid-stay-set (Medium strength for an oak/MDF top 1000x500x 22mm). The lid locks open at 70degrees and when pulled shut it takes about 20secs to close - so no slammed lids/trapped fingers. Once the top is pulled down the hinges start to fold, so no need to touch them. You do need to download the PDF instructions as none are supplied, and they have to be fitted accurately (dimensions show to the 1/2mm from the pivot hinge knuckle centre!!!)
