I have a job to do this week stripping lining paper for a customer and then re decorate.
Never stripped wall paper before so looking for any tips, shall be hiring a steam stripper.
I told them their may be some nasties underneath, it may end up re plastering.

Score the paper, loads of steam and a sharp fairly thick scraper with a slight flex. That's about it I think. Not a lot to it... :D

You definitely want a steam stripper - there's no point in struggling without one.
If the paper is not painted it should come off easily.
If it is painted I've had good results from a little spiked metal roller which you use to pierce holes in the paper to let the steam through.

Taking the paper off is easy bit. If painting after you must clean all the glue residue off the wall. This can be messy so cover all the carpets and clean off with water with distilled vinegar or if a bit more is needed try using water and washing soda crystals...............dom

Im not sure hiring on is necessary. One of cheapish diy ones will work fine.

I find that it helps to be steaming one patch whilst stripping one thats done.

If a wall has been lined, its probably quite scabby underneath. Thats means lots of sanding and filling or re-skimming the whole wall

Just in the process of refurbing my own house, a steamer in unnecessary. Just lots of scoring and plenty of warm water. Let it soak for five mins and then scrape away. You will likely need to rub the plaster down afterwards to remove any adhesive residues.

Never used a steamer in the 50 or so years that I have been the nominated paperhanger for parents, in laws etc.
I have always used a wallpaper stripper such as Polypeel.

Alan.

I hate those "load bearing" bits of wallpaper you come across that want to take half the wall with them.

I would say take off a small patch on a couple of different walls to see what is underneath. Just done a couple of rooms and the hallway in my current house and ended up re-skimming all of it. I bought a cheap steamer years ago thats done loads of houses. Whether you use a damp sponge or steamer be aware that electrics and water don't mix so I would turn of the power at the CU before you get water near the wall

My grandmother's house had cob walls and over half an inch of wallpaper in places - if she hung a picture she'd use a six inch nail. :D

You did not say if this was painted lining paper, if not, then just try wetting it well with cold water with some washing up liquid in. A garden spray is ideal, go over it several time to get the paper really saturated and leave it for a while so the water starts to break down the old adhesive. I used to wet the whole room, and go over it four or five time before picking up a scraper.

If it is painted or emulsion, then you need to break the surface first. The decorator's shops do sell a tool with spiked wheels that will do this. You can also score it with a stanley knife, or even rub it over with 80g wet and dry first.

If that fails, then get the steam stripper out. In my experience I have not had to use a steam stripper very often, its more to do with the getting the paper wet right though and using a good scraper. Get a good quality scraper, with a very ridged blade.

Thanks chaps,
Screw fix sell those spiky tools will get one tomorrow, can charge it to the customer.
Yes the walls are painted with emulsion.
Starting tomorrow, will see how it goes.
