Lovely looking piece od wood Dave and nicely turned showing the grain to best effect
Looking at the underneath piccy i would say that it is Beech.
You can just see the small darker pinky flecks that you get in Beech.
Top piccy does look like Sycamore with the growth rings.
Aled - Hadn't thought of Sycamore but I know what you mean.
It didn't cut like any Sycamore I've done before and it is more pink than yellow in colour. Hard to tell from photo's.
I started to turn another bit of it and this popped out.
The bark on the inside fits with Cornucopia's suggestion of crotch wood. I'll whack some glue in before I take off any more and post pic's otf the results.
