Unless I'm missing something this doesn't just apply to photographers - anyone who creates any kind of image professionally will be potentially at risk.

It looks like the bill in question , which may already have been given Royal assent, allows changes to IP (intellectual property) rules to made in future by a change in regulation, rather than law, which means the changes do not need to be discussed in parliament. The specific issue is around copyright on Orphan documents that have no obvious connection to their creator. This is designed to cover old photographs and documents but the concern is that it will also apply to image files that have had their identifying information stripped off, this probably includes most files published on the internet.
As far as I can tell that 'regulation' has not been implemented yet, but the bill will allow it to be.

I've had my work ripped off on the internet in the past. It's really annoying, especially if you spent hours working on something and people pass it off as theirs.

I also have a friend who's an artist in ceramics, mainly. She's had her work completely copied, even to the extent that collectors of her work have bought the rip-offs, thinking they're really by her (sold in galleries!). She's having real difficulty getting it stopped, even though the forger is in this country and known.

This type of law is so shortsighted. Intellectual property rights form a cornerstone of modern society. Take them away and you kill creativity in so many spheres, as people cannot afford to concentrate full-time on being creative.

It's already happened to me. One of my paintings from a painting forum I belong to has been used on a 'flyer', by a firm who are 'restoring' some countryside near me.
My picture is described as 'An artists Impression of the new pedestrian walk-way to be laid down through the woods'!

In a way it's a compliment, but it's still a 'Flaming Liberty'.

Grab a copy of the flyer, then to the small claims court, post haste.

They owe you the commercial rate for that!

If you're cross about the development, tip the local press off, too. I forget where you are, but the local paper and then the BBC local news...

Sorry to hear that John. I would also send an email, you then have proof you made contact with them. They could claim the letter was never received unless it was sent via a signed for method?
