Hi

Please bear in mind I'm not very computer confident, everything takes me forever.

For work, I've been trying to make a pro forma document and have activated the developer tab. I've learnt how to insert drop down lists, date pickers and plain text.

What I now want to do is the following: In a sentence I want to use the plain text content control to enter a reference number in the middle of a sentence. So far so good I can do that. But I want that reference number to appear in several different other places in the document. Is there a way I can link these places and only enter it once yet it appears in all the places?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any help

Regards

Mark

Mark,

Off the top of my head, you use Insert : Reference : Cross-reference.

I can't picture it as I sit here, but I'm pretty sure that's it. If I get a chance on the old PC, I'll take a look and see if that does what you need.

I'm not exactly sure what you are doing, but one of the simplest ways would be to use the very basic Find Replace function. If you type any symbol where you want the ref no to appear, such as /, then go to Find and Replace, type the symbol in the Find field and the Ref No in the Replace field then click Replace All.

Sorry, just in case that's wrong, it was the wife that answered this, not me!!! I don't even know how to switch the computer on.

Guys I'm grateful for the input. I've quickly looked at both your suggestions but not sure either is correct (but I am a bit slow on a computer)

I've re read my 1st post, I dont think I've explained myself very well.

I have to regularly write a legal document for work. It is basically the same each time, just small changes like the date etc. (i'm no lawyer)

Obviously I could write one document out and save it. Then next time just delete and write in the changes. However I'm trying to be a bit more professional and have a protected document and only allow changes to be made to those bits of the doc that need changing. My research so far has lead me to activate the developer tab in word. That has given me the ability in the middle of a sentence to have a drop down box to select one of a few default options. It has also allowed me to click the middle of the sentence and click the date rather than write it out.

One of the other things that also changes is a reference number. I cant do that as a drop down box as they are random and therefore I cant list the options. I have used the "plain text content control" within design mode of the developer tab. This allows the rest of the sentence to be protected from change but I can write in the reference in the middle of the protected sentence.

So I can do all the above

Now, this reference appears numerous times throughout the document. What I want to do is write it the first time but it insert every other place I need it at the same time - thats the bit i'm struggling with. Other wise I end up writing it out (or paste /replace) 10 + times

So, anyone?

Thanks

Mark

It is Chas. Thats what I'm trying to do, though I've follwed it and its not working. I'll keep trying
The bit just over half way down by Andi Yudhistira seems to describe what I want, but its not copying to the second location
