Another Workshop Tour

Hi Guys,
Can you guess I got a camera for christmas!! At least I feel as if I can contribute a bit more now.

Welcome to the tour of the workshop. It is a single skin, single garage in the back garden, with an up and over metal door on one end, and a hardwood glazed door leading from the garden. It is heated with a 2kw fan heater which takes the chill off.

A few months ago, SWMBO went on a hen weekend to Dublin. All she brought me back was a sign which hangs in the door. I'm still not sure if it was meant for me, or as a message for unwelcome visitors. I really must ask her sometime!!

On entering the workshop, an immediate turn left takes you to the Myford ML8 lathe.

Against the up and over door is my table saw, thicknesser, offcuts box and set of sash cramps.

Down the far wall is bandsaw, night-school made tool chest, mitre saw, saw horses, sanders and storage.

There is a bench at the far end, with home-made sander, drill press and grinding wheels. No prizes for guessing what is for tea tonight!

Coming back up towards the entrance door are the G-cramps and more storage.

Finally, a view from the end.

I don't make much large stuff, so it suits me fine. Any large stuff I have made is constructed outside on a nice day.

Great workshop mate, looks like it might double as a rifle range judging by the target and brace of pheasant hanging up. :shock:

I'm not sure and I could be corrected, but ain't yer supposed to hang fezzants upside down? Or are they stuffed!

I like your Myford. Is it old, or have they just not changed the design?

You have less room than me, so I hope you manage better!

Good use of space and pretty tidy. Surely someone has to have a go at some one upmanship and have a pig hanging up or some pigeons. The pheasants add some rural chic to the whole space. If you had some oak cut on the table saw you could oak smoke the pheasants. Brilliant :lol:

No need to pluck 'em Matty...sharp knife down the breast bone, take of the head and parsons nose, cut off the wings and feet, then just peel the skin complete withe 'fevers away from the bird...then take out the innards Takes me about 3mins to do a bird like this...then into a slow cooker casserole with veg for about 10 hours, take all the bones out (including metalwork :wink: ) after about 8 hours - Rob

Thanks for the comments guys.

John, the myford came from a school, and is old. Cost me £50, and was pink when I got it! A coat of grey hammerite seems to have done the trick. The motor sometimes has a tendancy to squeal, but other than that it goes round which basically is all that it is required to do. It will do for a novice until I can afford something better.

Yep.. Nice lathe then. The squealing. Might be the headstock bearing needs adjusting? Is it a drip oil-feed like the Coronet, I wonder.
I think the old Myfords were a shade of grey originally, a sort of 'dove grey'? Can't remember now! :mrgreen:
But yes they are great workhorses.

I also agree.. you made good use of a single car garage. You should see the mess in mine!

Lets have a few pictures of your tool chest - theres a thread running about tool storage at the moment and it would be good to see more as it looks nicely done.

Nice space you have there. The home-made disc sander looks interesting.

Have you given any thought to insulating the up-and-over door? I assume the don't use it but, still, it must get pretty drafty at times?

There is no insulation anywhere in the workshop, including the up and over door. I do open it if I am cutting long items on the tablesaw, so not sure how I would achieve this.
Working as a tallyman in a timber merchants got me used to the cold :lol:

What you have done with the space you have is amazing! Now you've got a digital camera, no excuses for not posting WIPs and finished projects!

Just one suggestion, a coat of white paint on the brick walls would lighten up the shop so much and make it a better place for you to work :wink:

Nice tidy, well organised shop there, looks like a nice place to work. No smegger is seeing my garage until it's had a tidy and I've cured the erm, wind and water ingress issues
