Just cleaned up a plane blade for a friend; the corrosion is quite bad, and the logo rather shallow.

I won't post a photo - I didn't manage to get anything even vaguely clear.

As far as I can make out, using various light sources, angles, and magnifiers, there's a logo of an 'L' and a 's', and around this is (I think)

Lead*** & Scott

However, all these characters are open to question.

Can anyone help?

OK, I always was stubborn.

Some communing with my camera this morning produced this (with various light angles)

It looks like Leadbeater to me bb.

I googled it, but nothing to do with plane-irons came up..
Have you tried inverting the pictures in Photoshop?

Hope this is a further clue..
John :)

So, staring at the photograph...

The logo is clearly composed of 'L' and 'S'

I'm fairly happy I can see "& SCOTT" on the right.

I'm happy with 'AT-R" between 11 and 1 o'clock.

And a fairly clear "EAD" over at 9-10 o'clock

Putting all this together we have

LEAD--AT-R & SCOTT

Leadbeater & Scott?

hi BB,

You probably know this already, but just in case...
John Leadbeater is listed as a saw maker in Sheffield in 1829, so there may be some sort of link?

cheers,
Andy

No. that's news to me; my only reference material is a first edition Goodman.

Of course, in literature, first editions are desirable, but in reference material, less so.

I seem to remember seeing a Leadbeater among a list of chisel manufacturers on ebay recently. One of those mixed lots for a selection of rusty blades.

Cheers,

Matthew

From a rather knowledgable person on another list:

Though listed, primarily, as steel manufacturers, ads for Leadbeater
& Scott indicate that they also manufacturerd files, saws, hammers,
engineering tools, etc. At this point in time, I have these working
dates:

LEADBEATER & SCOTT Sheffield 1876 - 1911
St. Mary's Works, Penistone Road [1876 - 1901]
National Steel Works, Penistone Road [1905 - 1911]

Their 1876 ad states that they were established in 1846, but I've
found no listings for Leadbeater & Scott as late as 1862. So, the
1846 date must refer to a preceding firm of a different name.
Leadbeater & Scott appear to have been established some time
between 1862 and 1876. Also, as usual, the 1911 date simply
refers to the latest directory available to me.
