Last knotty question for a while. Can you suggest a locking knot or hitch that can be tied to a dowel but won’t slide under diagonal load and is easily tied and untied?
Thank you,
Andrew

Rolling hitch as above...

Have a look for an app called animated knots by grog. I think you may have to pay a small fee for it, or it may be free? I've had it for years. Really useful resource for all your rope needs.

I'm sceptical about it's ability to grip to a tapered pole, but I've tried and tested it on dowel and straight sided poles and it's excellent.

Talking of knots, does anyone have a solution to leather laces on deck shoes? I've tried everything I can think of or find on the web, but they always come undone after half an hour or so.

I'm kind of guessing but I assume they undo as they are slippery. They are probably very dry which makes them slippery and not supple enought to get a tight knot, so i wonder if there is a way to make them more supple. You could try misting them with water to start with and see if they hold longer. Perhaps a light sanding?
Perhaps try applying something like dubbin to make them softer in the long term?

That's odd, I have a couple pairs of deck shoes with leather laces, and virtually never have to tie them! They seem to stick together better than normal "string" laces in fact. They are quite old so the leather is very supple and quite rough.
Are yours a new pair @John Brown? I'd try some Dubbin as suggested above.
