Sorry to hear you're at the wrong end of dodgy service, Bilzee. Sounds a bit similar to Rutlands bad habits with regard to the swift debiting of the credit card. Better off out of it now than later if you ask me. Like AG says, D&M are pretty good as an alternative. Too bad diygear.com's price is totally OTT; the guy who runs that really understands about how to treat his customers.

Cheers, Alf

Hi Billzee,

Bit of a bugger with the DeWalt. Know nothing about that particular model.
Furthermore I can't recall ever seeing a yellow B/S in stock anywhere nor in anybody's workshop. Perhaps it's a "sign" that your supplier cannot supply.....I've never been a fan of buying machinery mail order, much prefer the face to face heated discussion on price and spec with a local tool supplier. I use two dealers that cover all the brands and models that I'm interested in. I find the best realistic price that I'm happy with on the net and the comics and then make an offer to the local dealer. As I've a bit of "buying history" with my two dealers my offer is taken seriously and after 10 mins of argy-bargy I'm happy and the dealer appears happy too.
Obviously all this depends on the relationship with supplier but I'd rather make full use of a personal and local aftersales service rather than having to ship a B/S or similar many miles back to a mail order company.
Whatever you decide to do, hope you get sorted.

Rgds

I have noticed a lot of comments about "Dure- Edge" band saw blades. Are they good? What sort of price are they. I have a very old cast iron band saw which I bought on E-Bay. It works realy well since I fitted ball race guides but I only have 1/2" blades.

Jaymar,

Yes, they're very good. Excellent welds, rounded backs to minimise wear on the guides and available in skip, regular and hook tooth depending on blade size. Plus the delivery is included and pretty prompt in my experience.

As an example of prices, in the following sizes, 1/4" first, them 1/2" and 3/4" (according to the list I have, which may be out of date):

81-84" £7.61, £8.02, £11.40
87.2-91" £7.81, £8.26, £11.60
133-138" £ 9.94, £10.73, £15.02

Give 'em a bell on 08702 252337 and ask for some bumf and it'll tell you all you need to know.

Cheers, Alf

Have been on to toolsdirectuk and had a moan, they have redebited my card.

Noely. I'm many miles from a decent tool suppplies and have had reasonable experiences with mail/web order.

I don't doubt the validity of your opinion though. Definitely better if you can face the seller for all the obvious reasons.

Failing that I guess is to try to concentrate on a quality name when buying.

I am seriousley considering a Startrite, anyone got one ????

Ok, eyes down, hold your breath, I'm going for my second try on saturday.

A second-hand, one owner, low mileage, lady driver ( no clutch, thank god  oops...sorry ladies :) ) Original tyres and probably/hopefully original blade  Startrite 351. 300mm cutting depth 8)

If this is a goodun it'll make my day.

Fingers ain't the only thing crossed :)

I've used one extensively and have been very pleased. They stand up to lots of misuse - and are easy to setup. Lots of schools and colleges use them due to their ability to withsstand lots of abuse!

Hi All

The deed is done and its sitting in my garage/workshop as I type :)

The guide blocks are quite worn and will need to be re-faced or replaced ( hopefully the former). The top tyre has a bit of rutting @ the front ( 6mm)but as there's plenty of good tyre ( 27mm tyres) I don't think it will be a problem.

Its a pretty solid number, very simple and straight forward, basic type of machine.

After making a few adjustments; guide blocks, squaring the table to the blade and tensionong the blade I resawed a 4" piece of softwood.

Bearing in mind the worn guide blocks there also seemed a bit of drift angle

After adjusting the fence to this it cut fairly straight but I intend to get the blocks done asap and then expect it to be pucker.

Its quite a beast compared to the EB250, a little noisy but looks and feels like it will work all day long without a tea break.

Very basic but solid with everything on it easy to adjust and simple to understand.

I think I've got it right this time and am well chuffed :)

cheers

billzee
