I designed and made this just in time for Christmas for SWMBO. It's made from a batch of rustic grade English Oak i aquired about 7 years ago.

I machined all the Oak and glued up 2 book matched pieces for the bottom. Whilst drying i made templates for all the shaped pieces from mdf and then cut out the 8 pieces for the cabinet and draw box. Quickly dovetailed together-

I rebated the back of the cabinet to take a 6mm MDF board and attached the draw box to the cabinet with screws. Screwed from inside the box.

A final sand and 3 coats of danish oil-

Prior to oiling the draw components where fitted to the draw box, and dovetailed and assembled-

The draw front was cut from a thicker section and shaped to match the bottom shelf. A small carved pull made from Laburnum was made and fitted, with a small mortice and tenon, i also carved a slight 'dish' above and below it-

The Mdf back was given 3 coats of blackboard paint, and screwed into the rebate. The draw front was oiled and fitted to the draw.

Finished and hung on the kitchen wall-

Thanks for looking!

Very good , simple design and neat construction, I like the curved drawer front and the arch. How did you get the curve on the drawer?

Matty

Thats a lovely design and a nicely executed project, if I had to make a comment, I think the drawer sides appear to be to thick for my liking.

Matty - I like it! :D...a bit quirky, but I really like it :D Now I know that one of the reasons that you cut such excellent dovetails is that you've got all the right marking out kit   ...nice also to see that you like curved drawer fronts as well, could be a new trend on the forum :) - Rob

Matty,

not my style of furniture, but I really like the fact that this is an unusual design and high quality workmanship. Very good indeed.

Is the big black area a blackboard?

I am guessing that either there was something specific intended for the drawer, or you were using up scraps and that shape made the most efficient use of what you had. I would have instinctively made (a) shallow drawer/s the whole width of the unit.

Anyway, well done.

Mike

Thanks you for all the comments  .

To answer a few questions-

How did you get the curve on the drawer?
Damian

Bandsawn from thick stock, and cleaned up with a spokeshave and scraper.

Waka i completely agree, they are about 15mm, 8 or 9mm would have been better.

Mike- Yes it's a blackboard. The draw was designed that size for pens and other bit's & bob's. I like your suggestion about a full width draw and no doubt i'll evolve this design and change lots of things.

It was relatively a relatively rushed design, and although I am happy with it, there is certainly room for improvement. All comments are welcomed and appreciated.

Matty,
excellent!

I particulary like how the arch on the top lifts the whole piece. Now I'm trying to think of a valid reason to make something similar!

Lovely work; but 'quickly dovetailed together' my first attempt at a similar amount of dovetails probably took me 16 hours and look rubbish!

Well done Matty and thanks for sharing.
I think this is a cracking project with nice design and of course a utilitarian aspect. Your dovetails look excellent. The only thing that I wondered was why you didn't orient the tails on the drawerbox the same as the frame, ie to look like the tails were holding the bottom of the drawerbox from dropping out through gravity , if you know what I mean.
That said I really like the piece and would like to make something similar myself so thanks again.
John

This is really nice, Matty. I look forward to seeing more of your work on the forums! :)

You only say the dovetails were cut "quickly"... Does that mean they were done by hand or machine? :D

Tulsk has made a good point about the orientation of the dovetails at the bottom. You should have anything to worry about with modern glues though - even if you overloaded the drawer, it's more than likely the timber would break before the glue line!!
