As I now have a bus pass and free prescriptions I am contemplating buying an Anglepoise Magnifier Light to assist close work on things like dovetail and the like. I wondered if anyone has experience of using one of the and whether they also double as a task light for general illumination over a bench. At £60.00 they seem excellent value but I would value any comments from members on this particular lamp or any other form of dual purpose magnifier/ task lights which may be available

Google for Shesto, they do a very nice one with twin fluorescents, more workshop sturdy than average.

I got an anglepoise magnifier light for SWMBO to use when embroidering. OK for very close up stuff like removing splinters from fingers, but I've not tried it for anything of dovetailing size. I found I had problems with getting both eyes to focus through the magnifier when it was more than a couple of inches from the subject.
This one is fitted with a daylight bulb for her work, so would not give much general illumination.

Thank you, I looked at the Standard Round Fluorescent Magnifier Lamp [PLA8064] at £59.95 looks very much like the Anglepoise but you think it might be more substantial ? The Shesto website looks very interesting but I think the jury is still out on magnifier lights. I do not want a dedicated magnifier lamp, I am looking for a lamp which will also double as a task light, as mentioned and comments so far raised seem to indicate that a magnifier light will not give enough illumination for task light purposes. I do have a standard Anglepoise 75 which offers good illumination at the other end of my bench and the adjustability allows it to be angled towards my band saw or my router table

I have this one. It's quite sturdy, and I find it great for saw sharpening, but it might be tricky to position it so that it doesn't get in the way whilst sawing joints. I also use it as a general work light in my windowless workshop - it's reasonably bright but the lamp/magnifier is rather heavy so it's not as easy to position as a standard anglepoise.

Hello Ken,

There was another recent thread on lamps. Have a look at the Daylight Company products. I can vouch for the quality as I have one of these. Not cheap I know, but I use this mostly on the woodbench and 18W gives a very useful level of illumination. I like the separate magnifier stalk too, as I don't need it for most jobs. Hobbycraft stock most of the D.C. range

I use one of these at work. I'd say this is one of the best bench lamps out there.

If you want even more light to flood a bigger area, I can recommend one of these. Also available with small stand or on it's own for wall mounting. It's 6500K - not specifically daylight spectrum output but as nearly as good I'd say.
cheers,

ike
