Not sure if this counts as a step in the hollow form direction, but that was the intention!
Done using a 1/2" bowl gouge and nowt else (not sure why really, just an experiment)
I left it fairly chunky (about 7mm) as i didn't have the bottle to turn the 2 voids in the sides to holes as it's my first time trying this wood.

Comments and critique welcome (apologies for the shoddy camera work!).

That's the first time I've seen anything in that wood. It's beautiful, and the shape lets the figuring take centre stage.

As a newcomer to the hollow form concept myself, can I ask what sort of grind you had on the 1/2"? I'm trying out different grinds at the moment to see what I get on with best.

Shows the figuring off well, next time if you gently blend the top inner edge to a thinner profile, instead of the pronounce curve, the piece should give the impression of being thinner until someone picks it up.

Thanks guys!

Roy, i use quite a long fingernail grind normally(swept back or several other terms for the same thing). I found that turning the 'blind ' section when i was undercutting led to a bit of scrape, so i shortened the bevel a touch on the grinder which did the trick.

I'm a beginner myself not sure what would be the 'right' way to do it, but it seemed to work ok for me.

Having tried a hollowing tool at the club i attend, i realise it would have been 10 times easier with a specialist tool.
I think i'm a sucker for a challenge, and tight-fisted enough not to want to pay too much for a steel bar with a little tip bolted on!!

Ambonya burr makes great pens too Roy. It is a really beautiful timber. I think it was used for the dashboards etc. of vintage Rolls Royces and Bentleys.

That looks great Ryan hope to see it on Wednesday.
Shan't be doing any turning myself this weekend as it is Lincoln steam rally.

Going thinner until the holes appear is not actually as scary as it sounds and once they are there you can see what you are cutting inside. As long as the rest of the wood is sound it is no more difficult than what you have done already. Having said that there is nothing wrong with what you have already done. I think that it woukld be classed as an open form, halfway between a hollow form and a bowl. The pro at our club reckons that if you can get your fingers inside it's open, if you can't it's a hollow form.

Lovely shape, nice finish and look forward to seeing more, with or without holes

Pete

Have you thought of making your own? a length of bar bar of suitable quality/strength with a flat section ground away at the end, tapped and able to hold one of the sorby tips (the flat ones with a hole for fixing) these can be picked up on ebay cheaply and would work well with the size of opening you have and would give you the confidence to work thinner and through smaller openings!
Well done again, Chris.

very good Ryan especially seeing as you used a gouge!!
you are welcome to come try out my home made tools- silver steel shafts with hss tips with 10% cobalt just like David ellsworths :D

Thanks again guys!
I feel daft for worrying about posting any work before!

Malcolm - i'll try and remember it Wednesday!

I have considered making an Oland type tool or two, figuring if it was good enough for George it's worth a shot. 8) The Sorby tips seems like an idea too.
George - i wouldn't mind trying yours somewhen, and certainly picking your brains about how to make one if that's ok?
