On special offer in aldi's today they had some vacuum storage bags, i wondered if these could be used to veneering and maybe laminating, They were £6.50 for two bags, one 1000mm500mm and one 1000x1000mm.
I brought some and was keen to see if they would work so i knocked up a quick former, and tried laminated two pieces of 3mm mdf, put the former on some 6mm mdf with some 5mm holes to aid in sucking out any air, glued up the laminates slid the whole lot in, put a j-cloth under the valved so it wouldn't seal on itself, sealed the bag and attached the dust extractor.
Out came all the air, the laminates came together well, and tight success??? Not quite they were a few problems, after about 15mins the air pressure was not as tight, easily fixed a quick 30second blast with the extractor. and kept it running for first 15mins, then 30seconds every5mins seemed enough.
I took it out, alot of spring-back, was expected as i only laminated two pieces, i popped these two back in, with another 3laminates making a 15mm thick curve (possible drawer front).
Followed the same procedure, all was well, needed 20mins instead of 15, but it seemed to work.
All in all a cheap and cheerful way of vacuum forming, i went back and brought a couple more packs, I thought the bags would be quite flimsy, but they were quite substantial.
I do think some 1.8mm ply would be ideal, nice and easy to bend, with less possible spring-back.
