Again, according to government figures, the immigrant population into England has doubled in the last 10 yrs and now stands at 8 percent, granted that many immigrants live in crowded accommodation, the government has even coined a neutral sounding phrase for it, the housing stock has not kept pace.
The number of immigrants into a country does not in itself necessarily cause problems, it's the rate of increase that causes problems because the necessary changes cannot be put into effect fast enough. Today the government's official spokesman, Byrne, again stated that they had no intention of capping immigration, this on the same day as Ms Blears admitted that the pressure of immigration was causing problems, which the LGA says includes pressure on housing.
And before somebody stands up and starts shouting racist I am an immigrant in Wales, I am Jewish and I am third generation immigrant.
What I am not is blind and deaf to what uncontrolled immigration can do. If in doubt check the history of Palestine, Cyprus and Tibet! Or further back, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and America!

What has that got to do with the british habit of over-drinking,Roy? Do you agree with Rich's (latest) absurd hypothesis - that it is caused by immigration?

Obviously, if there were less slow walkers around, our kids would be good as gold!

As I pointed out earlier Jake Rich's absurd opinion has official support.
And out of curiosity I spent 3 hours in a hospital waiting room earlier this week and I have to confirm that black staff that I saw certainly seemed to move more slowly than the others.
I formed no conclusions as to why.
I also noticed that they seemed not to slouch as much as the others, again I formed no conclusion as to why.
If noticing such differences makes me a racist then so be it!

Roy.

Meanwhile, back at the topic...

When I was in my teens and twenties, drinking played a major part in my and my friends' lives - but was very different to today.

For a start, we drank beer - mainly draught bitter. The whole point of a night out was to have a laugh with your mates and hopefuly 'cop off' with a compliant female of dubious morals (although this rarely actually happened!). In the process maybe 6 or 7 pints would be consumed, you'd make a bit of a prat of yourself, and wake up the next day with a thick head.

The drinking was merely a lubricant to the evening's activities, not an end in itself. We drank because we liked the taste of good beer and the feeling of 'merriness' that it imbued. Mild intoxication was a by-product of the process, not the sole aim.

Today's youngsters however, seem to be on a mission to get as pi$$ed as possible, as quickly as possible. They drink vodka and Bacardi instead of beer or wine - drinks with absolutely no pleasant taste or sophistication; their sole attribute being a high alcohol content and, when mixed with Coke, being easy to get down your neck. I'd rather drink turps!

Alcohol when used correctly can be a life enhancing commodity. When abused it can literally destroy lives. In my view any initiative to educate our young people into sensible drinking behaviour should be welcomed. I would back it up however, with legislation to outlaw the sale of spirits to anyone under about 50 and to limit the alcohol content of beer, lager and cider to 4%.

I still drink more than I probably should. I like a beer or two when I get home from work to blast the dust out of my throat, and a couple of glasses of red wine with my dinner. Again though, this is not through a desire to get drunk - far from it. It's just a nice way of relaxing in the evening after a hard day at work.

...and that's exactly my sentiments as well on how I used to have a few beers at the weekend with mates. Not sure tho' about the complete ban on spirits, this might lead to a Prohibition style situation as they had in 'Murrica in the 20's and you only need to see what happened then. Again, limiting the strength of beers is doubtful, weaker beers to me seem to have less flavour, so I tend to go for a stronger pint. I don't drink cider (SWIMBO's tipple) but when I look at the alcohol content of some of them  on the shelves... I think something fairly drastic needs to be done to restrict the sale and free availability of strong drink, but now I'm well over the watershed age  does it mean I can still have me bottle of malt at Christmas? - Rob

No you didn't, Roy - you pointed out some stats about housing availability. There's a bit of a missing link between the effect of immigration on housing and the over-drinking of our native children/'yout'.

Did you conclude that 'they' were therefore all slow of thought, Roy? If so, I'd say it undoubtedly would make you a racist (conciously or not).
