Afternoon All
I’m running a bit of a mix and match setup. I’ve complimented my traditional gas central heating with a Daikin split AC unit, which also acts as an ASHP to provide heating. In all but very cold temperatures it provides comfortable heating at a lower cost, with the gas boiler used only for hot water. When it drops below around 2 or 3 degrees it gets turned off and the central heating is switched to provide both water and heat. It does still work at these lower temps but not quite as well and has to work a lot harder, so I give it a rest. I’ve been doing this for the last 3 years and it works a treat, with the added bonus of having a comfortable house in the summer when it gets hot. Cost difference between gas and electricity may mean I’m not saving anything, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to leave these units sitting doing nothing for months.
I’m fortunate enough to have a small brick-built workshop with decent insulation, so I had a smaller unit fitted to that a year after the first was installed in the house. With no gas CH option this has been a game changer for heating costs, and very nice in the summer.
Under the right circumstances, I’m not against idea of having a complete system to replace gas in the right property. If I do eventually have to the opportunity to choose, my advice and system design will never come from a salesman. I just wish the gas boiler manufacturers would all get together and tell the government where to stick their stupid targets and penalties BS, and let the technology and innovation permeate into the market at a sensible pace, as it would undoubtedly do.
