Shultzy,

isn't this a fan and a box with a couple of filters? If so, I reckon that you could make one in an hour or two for £20 or £30, couldn't you? It is certainly on my "to do" list.........

Mike

I have the next size up on the Axmister range and it was the best buy I made so far.
Been a real boon in the last couple fo years since I got it :D

I know there is a post on the forum of how to make one, but I think the fans alone are quite expensive as are the filters.

Mike
give me details on how to do and what to get and I'll be a fan of yours for life . Air on a Shoestring is what I'm after so please do . Cheers !

Well, I'm planning to start with a ply box with a hole a each end.......a kitchen-type extractor fan at one end (£15-£20 ish), and a coarse cloth primary filter over the other (probably an old tee shirt or bit of curtain lining). Maybe that other end will be hinged to allow access to the filters. A baffle across the middle would hold the fine filter...........now, this will probably be some big old truck or tractor-type air filter in mine, but you could just as well buy a replacement filter from Axminster and make that work. I don't know if you can reduce the speed of the fan, but that would be the only other thing I would consider.......

Someone please tell me if there is something fundamental I have missed!

Mike that was my thought a box a fan and a filter

Well the filter nearly came to £50 fan was £40-60 plus the switch etc
this was my plan.

In the end I got the Jet AFS1000B which has twin filter 3 speed fan, remote and timed run.

It works great

Shultzy,
I personally have the Jet AFS 500, three speed, remote, so if mounting high in the rafters easy enough to switch on, and also has a run on feature where you set it to run for 2, 4 or 8 hrs after leaving the shop and then it auto shuts down

HTH

Mike , Shulszy & Paul I get the idea lads but all a bit much for my 8' x 10' shed , size and price wise . A smaller version of what you have there Mike just might evolve so will keep an eye on that one . All good stuff but that one from Dave L is up in the inDUSTrial bracket , ingenuity to envy . Cheers !

Luckily, I happen to have a couple of 8 inch extractors sitting around in one of my sheds........and the filter really could be anything. A car air filter will be fine (a mechanic friend will soon find me a decent one).....the ply is kicking around wasting space.......

.......therefore I reckon mine will be virtually free. I'm surprised it needs such a big fan though.

Mike

I too have the Jet AFS 500. I looked into making one, but by the time I had purchased a high powered "quiet"
fan, the filters and electronic components to make it remote and timer, I didn't think it was worth while, even
though it would of been fun buliding it from an electronic (another hobby) point of view. They way I look at it,
any money spent on items that are "good for you health", is money well spent. Well, thats the way I justified it
to the Mrs, but keep that quiet.

I've had it almost 2 years now and am still on the origional filters. I remove the filters once a month or so
and vac up the dust from them. As good as new after that.

There seems to be the idea on this post that you need a large or powerful fan for this type of filter but I really don't think you do.

The fan I used is way too powerful but it has five speed settings. I only use it on the first setting as any higher and there is a risk that it will pull some of the dust straight through the filter, therefore defeating its purpose.

All this is academic of course for Shultzy if you have gone and bought one but for anyone else thinking about making one just find an old extractor fan from a reclamation yard or the like and go for it - you'll be glad you did.

Might get a fan for nothing from Freecycle if there is one operating in your area.

Brian

As Brian said you don't need a very powerful fan, the one I used was an old rack cooling fan, it just moves the air gently, you don't want a gale blowing the drawings of the bench!

I've been trying on freecycle for 18months so far without
luck, i'll keep on trying though because i need one and
i'm skint
p.s. I've even been thinking of a way to knacker one of
my house ones slightly so the council would just replace
it and i could salvage the original one and use it. Weird
how the mind works sometimes is'nt it. :? :!:

Hi Tom
No its very quiet. Even on its highest setting it is not intrusive. I've had mine for about four years now and wouldn't be without it.
