hi folks

just purchased a new oak table upon inspection there is a small pimple in the middle of the table top (1 mm high, 3 mm diaminter).

Upon investigation it appears that a fixing screw has been screwed to deep from below and has pushed up the fibers/veneer on the top surface of the table causing the pimple.

i have removed the affending screw but the pimple is still there as it appears to have broken and pushed up the wood/veneer fibers.

can anyone give me some advice as how to best fix this problem. The best i could come with is to center punch the fibers back down and fill/hot wax the dent that would be left.

any advice welcomed.

many many thanks

jon

If the wood surface is not broken I would try pushing the lump down with the back of a spoon and see if stays flat.

If the pimple needs pushing down below the surface to hold then I would try a damp cloth and a soldering iron over the area to then raise the fibres to finished level. As always I would try on a area not seen first as a test.

Can the pimple just be sanded or is there a finish on the surface?

I'd do similar to that. If the table is small enough to be manageable is it possible to drip some very thin penetrating superglue into the screw hole and then use the spoon to hold the fibres flat whilst it sets (or a warm iron over a cloth)

You say 'just purchased' - I'd take it back and get an undamaged one.

Why should you pay good money and have to fix someone elses cockups?!

many thanks for all the advice, i will try some of them and let you know how i get on,

this is the 3rd table they have sent me and is the best out of lot and for the price i paid it is worth repairing as i got a 2m by 1 meter oak dining table and 6 leather chairs for £210.00 as they priced it wrong and have now given me an additional £50.00 off.

once again many thanks

jon
