Tim: all the above is good stuff...
I own a mixed bag of L-N, Veritas, Clifton, Stanley and some woodies. One of my favourites, as I've mentioned elsewhere, is my 1980's Stanley number 7. Horrible plastic handles, and no mouth adjustment.
But.... With a replacement Hock blade, and a (fair enough) pretty hard day's work on the sole with the old wet or dry paper on a sheet of glass, it is definitely one of my all time favourites. And whilst I'd like to replace the handles for aesthetic reasons (and will one day, when I get round to it), they are no different in terms of comfort to any of my other planes...
The key with any plane is: the blade, a flat enough sole, and an appropriate mouth and attack angle for the task at hand: this baby has all 4, and can true edges and flatten boards all day long.
