Hello SFP
Pillar Drill - I have 1 of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ho ... ill-505202 & like it a lot although it is not a convenient depth.
Band saw - I have had 1 of these for yrs http://www.recordpower.co.uk/product/pr ... uiD4I_XL4g which has served me well up to a point (the bearings fail very quickly if trying to cut something too big too fast). I have just about set up a much bigger 3ph machine.
Disk/Belt sander - again http://www.axminster.co.uk/makita-9404- ... der-600375 I have found to be a real workhorse.. but loud.
Circular saw table - http://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/Maki ... 0wodi6sGQA . Others don't rate these but mine has never let me down.. but an upgrade would be great.
I'd also recommend you think a lot about dust & something along the lines of http://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-afs-500- ... tem-310483
but catching it at source comes first ..& also http://www.axminster.co.uk/3m-7500-seri ... r-ax839416 is a must IMHO.
Look on here, ebay, preloved & gumtree for 2nd hand kit & Bristol Designs for great hand tools (esp infill planes).
Don't think you definitely need 10,00hrs of practice (or whatever is quoted) before you can make anything of worth. My 1st solid wood, full size project was a bookcase with a cupboard that I am still quite proud of. It has panelled doors & backing, some dovetail joints & a nifty locking system (?) holding the top to the cupboard.. but it's obvious my tools weren't always sharp enough if you look closely. I made it in a 6x4 apex shed that I could barely stand upright in, with the table saw above, a damn loud Dewalt portable PT & very few hand tools. My only previous experience was woodwork at school some 20 yrs earlier.
Also, I ask a lot of questions.. some (most?) not so clever.. so don't worry about doing the same if needed.
Good luck
