After all the advice I have received on the Hand Tools Forum I thought I should post some pictures of the end product. With everyones help I feel I have made my first real piece of furniture. I have made a few boxes, beds and tables over the years but this is the first project where I feel I have stuck largely to the rules, grain, joints, expansion etc and have learnt so much in doing so. It is a shaker style blanket box based loosely on a design from Storage & Shelving the Shaker Way, is made from yellow pine and finished with wax. It has been largely made with hand tools except for basic sizing with table and chop saws. It is by no means perfect but with what I have learnt from this project hopefully the next one will be better. I have really enjoyed making it.

Simon that is lovely, a very well executed piece of which you should be very proud. Nice to see you have elongated the screw holes in the battens to allow for expansion of the lid. two lovely cliftons you've got there as well =D>

I like it. Well done for persevering with hand tools - I've found southern yellow pine can be quite challenging, particularly when it comes to paring the end grain (dovetails) with even a sharp chisel.

Nice gloat on the Clifton planes, too.

Will you be adding a pair of stays to prevent the lid from slamming down?

What wood is that you're turning on your lathe? Doesn't look like SYP - is it tulipwood or poplar?

That's bloody lovely mate.
Where did you get such clear boards from, and were they expensive?
What finish do you plan on using?

Adam.

EDIT. I just re-read this as I'm so impressed and see you've finished it with wax.

Simon,

Never mind what the timber is (So much)... If you were misled then that's bad, but:

You made a proper job of the project. As far as I can see from the photographs, your work is as good as any I've seen, and your joints speak for themselves.

You have caused me to redesign my grand-daughter's 'Hope-Chest', but that's a mere coincidence. I can make adjustments.

Nice work, of which you should be proud. I would be quite content to turn out that standard of work. NBS!

Ah. Thanks, Pete!

Still, I've not seen cherry like that before... :D

Nor me... SWIMBO thought it was Parana Pine. But then what does she know? She can go only on the first six or so years of my woodworking, when P/P was the best timber I could afford! Hence I made a lot of Parana Pine projects.
