Abrasive to flatten plane soles

Obviously wet and dry is commonly used but I cant find it in anything other than standard sheet size. I'm looking for something on a roll for use on longer planes. Has anyone used this stuff from workshop heaven, says it can be used on metal. Does it need lubricating, is water OK?
I think 400g is the finest you need to go on a plane sole?

Any advice guys?

Hi Mark,

A few months ago, I was in the same position as you when Matthew recommend this stuff to me. I bought several sheets and glued them to a sheet of 18mm MDF, end-to-end in order get a long enough run. It's great stuff for initial flattening and removing the high spots.

It is excellent stuff and will remove material at an alarmingly fast rate! No lubricant is required. All you do is give the board a sharp tap on your workbench and the fine dust falls away! 8)

For a longer continuous sheet of wet and dry, try CSM Abrasives. They sell it by the metre and offer sheets in a couple of different widths and varying grit. This stuff is good for removing former scratch marks and getting a finer finish. Matthew also warned me, though, not to go crazy with it... Otherwise, the finer you go, the greater the risk of 'flash rusting' (where the steel rusts instantly after flattening). So, I finished on 240g, which is fine for woodwork.

Matthew sent me a sheet of that stuff as well...haven't used it yet but it looks pretty abrasive :shock: ...not for honing the final bevel - Rob
