I spent Tuesday at Tracy's house having a day's tuition and it was the best £120 I've ever spent. Aside from being a very nice bloke, Tracy is an excellent tutor who insisted that I do all the work (rather than watching him). I learned a huge amount and it sorted out a few niggles which I have had, as well as teaching me some handy tips for the future. I can tell that my turning has improved and my confidence is much higher than it was. Highly recommended to anyone looking to improve by spending time with an expert.

Now, I've just got to save up for the next one (hollowing I think).

Way to go Noggsy , getting lessons and being nudged in the right directions is a positive step . your confidence and therefore your turning will improve .

Money well spent in my opinion .

Hi Noggsy,

I am glad you enjoyed your day with Tracy Owen. He came recently to demonstrate at my local woodturning club (Mid Wales Woodturners) and was excellent.

Are newer turners aware that a day's tuition can be had for only a £20 contribution to AWGB funds? They are organised by AWGB through the "Revolutions" magazine and take place across the country. They are, of course, heavily over-subscribed, but I managed to get on one. I had a very good day last year with Les Thorne in Alresford (not that close to mid-Wales, I know) in September last year and learned so much in one day. I found that it was the little tips and tricks that helped so much, like moving the toolrest more frequently to keep it in ideal position to support the tool throughout the cut.

Hope you will be posting pictures showing the results of your new skills. You could also join the forum's woodturning monthly competition - it's great fun and takes you out of your comfort zone on occasion!!

Regards,

Cheers Mike. Yes, the little tips were very helpful and my confidence has definitely improved. I will put some pictures up of things I turn, but I don't think I'll join the competition yet. Here's what I made with Tracy the other day;
