I've always wanted a arbortech grinder thing and finally got round to getting one.

It's certainly quick, but i haven't found it the easiest of things to get along with - I was in homebase looking around last night and happened to spot the flappy sanding disk that fits onto an angle grinder -24 grit :!:  hopefully that'll smooth over the lumps and bumps.
I was mooching around the shops the other day and noticed they sell lego head storage tubs. I straight away took a pic and forwarded it to my mate who gets called legohead at work. I bought it then thought a nice project for the arbortech would be making it some arms...and the body
Before I've made stuff and have struggled to decide whether to keep it at work, or take it home. I like seeing stuff I've made whilst doing mundane jobs like thicknessing as it keeps me thinking of new ideas. So this time....

After having a fairly heavy night last night on the pop, I managed to get in the shop about 1 ish.
I turned the arms which I wasn't looking forward to but surprising it was quite fun !

When I originally started scaling of the toy model I managed to mess up the height prediction of the finished thing- its about 25 % bigger than I originally thought
I've gone with the storage theme again. His shirt opens somehow, and his legs will both be hinged down the side. It's not going to be the most spacious cupboard thingy but I thought it might be a little different.

The plan is to see if it'll stand/balance but I quite like the idea of it being fixed up to a wall. The other thing I haven't quite worked out yet is how to get its legs to bend- it'd be quite cool if it could sit or stand, but I still want to use the round bit on top of its legs for storage.

Looking good, I like it a lot better than the serial killer Rabbit :D
Don't take that as an idea to start sticking knives in this

Thanks....spoil sport :) - you sure it wouldn't be good for it to be wielding an axe or something :)

I did a bit more to these. I thought doing the shoulders was gonna be the worst part. Once some guide lines were drawn the rest seemed to happen fairly quickly.
guqe5u3u.jpg

I put some long screws in where its wrist fits in, all was well until I put cascamite on the ends and it started sliding everywhere.

The hand scaled slightly bigger than a can so I reduced the size to fit. I did think about making them from solid wood then cutting out on the bandsaw but wasn't 100% sure if the timber might move all over the place when I started cutting chunks away.
I thought stacking mdf might be more accurate. ....... just time consuming

I screwed on the pattern piece then fixed on the router stabiliser. Its the first time I've ever used it but it worked really well once I got the hang of swinging the thing around. I trimmed about 8 mm deep then thought I'd bandsaw and flush trim the rest off. I always remember a pic of wizers finger mishap so try and avoid router table trimming if possible- it scares me knowing what could happen  for some reason the flush trimmer had a 12.7 bearing but only a 12mm cutter :p took a little faffing around to get it to trim them out from the sheet I found an old skanky 12.7 bearing and reduced it to 12 using a file. I thought I could trim them right out but after a few brown trouser moments realised I had to leave it attached just a bit

It would be nice if I could somehow get the hand to squeeze up to grip things (not knives honest ;) ) so that's where im at at the moment. Something like how a 'Jin trap' works would be good,so it stays in the open position but upon pressing a button springs close. I can't decide whether its worthwhile pursuing this, or just crack on and glue the hands up.

Thanks for the comments, feel like im being brainwashed into turning it into a serial killer  I'll have a rummage through the 'odds n sods' drawer and see if there's anything that might be of use to get the hand gripping.
It'll need to be easy to maintain and the spring hidden in the c shape somehow. Also there needs to be a large dowel in the centre to fit into the arm, so I'll have to slice the fingers off centre so everything fits

When I get an idea in my head I only give up after its been untouched for so long and im bored of seeing it unfinished - hopefully the odds n sods drawer might have something useful. I reckon it'd be cool if I could give it the option to grip different things- knives, axes or ball and chain perhaps

If it is metal items then rare earth magnets
That'd definitely help hold something metal but still not the real positive grip id like. This is the bundle of bits ive cobbled together to try and suss out a gripping idea

I wouldn't mind one bit if you wanted to make one either !!! We could have a whole army of them across the UK
The only thing I've got chance to do is spend my argos gift voucher on another head

Just nipped into tesco and was scouting around the kitchen aisle for something suitable. I had to go back to work else I wouldn't have been able to sleep tonight

The pin only needs to move 6 mm to go from fully open to closed. If I attach a spring to the bottle opener end it should pull together o.k. only cost 2 quid buy might need 2 per hand ..... 6 hands ......12 bottle openers - balls

Off home to av a few beers

Why two per hand 1 should be enough if you make the hand pivot at the same point as the opener. Will try and draw a diagram just hope it makes sense The light coloured area is attached to the arm as you did before and the darker pivots on a dowel. You could stick as many together to make up the hand as before. with a little fiddling to let the bits move freely.

Thinking about it more I don't think I'll need any. Just copy the pivot points and have a bolt do the pulling.

Is the mix of Red Bull and Robinsons in the background of that last pic the reason for your strange but excellent choice of woodworking projects?
Just asking.

I see what you mean ;) Quite a pleasant surprise was that a straight cut doesn't foul when the fingers pinch together - I to thought the ends might need rounding. The hands were one of the things that I thought might make or break the usefulness of the unit/storage container. A plumber came in the shop and noticed them and queried whether they were going to be themed. I hadn't really considered the colours- as much as santa claus one would be great this time of year its kind of a one trick pony, if you know what I mean.
I've got Monday off so the redbull was to keep me on the ball and putting in the hours, the Robinsons was to counteract the caffeine headaches and the cans of lilt were to aid in the glueing off the hands- smear on the glue, push on the can then squash up in the vice. I might not need the cans now but reckon they'll taste nice
