Thanks for that Brian, and VERY good to see you back BTW. Hope the Sheffield tests went/will go OK.
Thanks for your "wing nut extension" idea. I don't know why, but on my Excali 21 I never have problems with the top blade holder, but sometimes I find the lower blade holder "wing nut" really hard to undo. I don't know if your gizmo will fit under there - I must try it, but it's a good idea all the same.
BTW, assuming that your Axi version is the same as my Excali, one point that they do make in the manual is about correctly setting the little hex-headed grub screw on the other side of the holder (i.e. opposite the blade holder "wing nut"). The book says that the grub screw should not protrude into the blade space, neither should it be withdrawn so that it is "behind" the blade holder so to speak, leaving a depression. (If this is not clear, give me a shout and I'll scan the appropriate diagram in the book).
Anyway, the book says that the "business end" (i.e. inner end) of the grub screw should be set exactly flush with the LH inside of the blade holder (as you look at the machine from the normal cutting position).
I found this a bit tricky to do to start off with, especially with the lower blade holder, and as the book also says, getting this wrong can lead either to broken blades (grub screw too far back inside the blade holder casting, leaving a depression); or, the other way round = over-tight blade retainers (i.e. grub screw too far out, into the blade space - your problem perhaps)? But I guess that with your hand & grip problems you need to check that this is set up just right.
What I did was to find a blade with the thickest ends possible and then put this, together with a small piece of ordinary writing or printer paper, into the upper and lower blade holders as usual. Then tighten the blade holders (the book says finger tight only) then bring the grub screws inwards until they feel like they're just touching the blade ends. Then remove the paper and check - a big hole in the paper = grub screw too far back, into the blade holder casting; a big black mark on the paper = grub screw too far out, into the blade space.
So you just turn grub screw in or out, as appropriate, then repeat the check (with new pieces of paper above & below of course!) until they're just right (I reckon that means a faint mark on the paper where the grub screw had just touched the blade end as you've tightened the wing nut).
Sounds a bit of a pallaver but actually it's much easier and quicker to do than to write it up. So far I've only had to do it once, although, as above, the bottom blade wing nut on mine is sometimes getting rather over tight, so I should check it again).
HTH, and again, welcome back - IMO you're an example to us all mate.
