The first of my nieces has got herself into a 'condition' and I'm starting to think about making a cot/crib of some type or other.

I'd like to think that it would be suitable for at least a years use and be practical. These little rocking things that sit on the floor are all very pretty but mean a lot of bending over for mum & dad. I'd like to avoid all the safety issues with dropsides and 'fiddle proof' fittings so I'm thinking of something like this with options to let it swing over a limited range or lock completely.

Has anyone built anything similar or got any tips or experiences to pass on?

How long is a 12-18month old baby?? It has been a long time since I had babies at home!

TIA

Bob

my boss has got one so i'll ask her for rough dimensions when i see her in a bit.

better no show her that picture tho , or i'll wind up joining you in crib making

Thanks Pete,

Management has just told me that our son was 23" (590mm ish) head to toe at birth but that was extreme apparently. He is now 6'4" as an adult.

We don't know how long he was at a year or so though.

Some 'normal' dimensions would be useful - thanks

Bob

I've got a "red book" which has all of the kids' measurements at key stages of development. The figures are set out on graph's showing "normal" length etc.

I'll dig it out and give you some info.

Cheers

Karl

My suggestion would be to go into mothercare et al and pick up a crib matress. you can then make the crib to suit the matress.

If you just decide on a suitable crib size you may have difficulty finding a suitable matress to fit

This is what I did when I made this

However the recipients are now 19 and 17 so its a few years ago.

Hopefully it will be put into use again with the next generation

Hi Bob

For boys, the average length at birth is 510mm. The range is as low as 460mm and high as 570mm (sounds like your son is a freak - no offence ). By the time they reach 12 months, average is 760mm, range 690mm to 830mm.

For girls the measurements are approx 10mm shorter at birth, and 20mm shorter at yr1.

HTH.

Cheers

Very good point!

I like the figuring on that side panel!

Cheers

Bob (soon to be Great Uncle Bob   )

Bob is this to be the babies bed\cot for normal night time sleeping or an occasional 'crib'? The tradition nowadays is to use a 'Moses' basket for the first few months (maybe less I can't remember) and then the baby is moved on to a cot.

I think TrimTheKing made something similar a couple of years ago.

I am try to find out what my niece's view is on this without giving away the element of a surprise gift.
If I am going to the effort of making this I would both like to see it used for as long a period as possible before being consigned to the attic and also for it to be a genuinely wanted gift rather than one pressed into use just when we visit

I am more than happy to put the hours into to making something but I would be really pi88ed if it were not to be fully used.

Bob

PS Tom are your planer bits in the post to me now?

Hey Bob

I made one here I have plans for this with measurements and everything so if you want them just drop me a shout.

My daughter used this every night until she was about 3-4 months old then we kicked her out into her own room as she was keeping us awake ;) (and she was getting just about big enough to fill it).

SWMBO was extremely happy with it, as was I :D

Yeh I think you need to take that into consideration. I think it would only be worth making if your neice is planning to have more (As Mark is). Otherwise you might want to look into making a cot, which would be the same amount of work IMO. Or you could make a nice moses basket stand?

and your parcel was posted on Saturday.

I have two nieces and 3 nephews as well as a son (who i just can't imagine as a father  ) So there is scope for this to passed around the family if they get their timing organised - who knows I might get quite a lot of use!

Royal snail parcels have been this morning but still to get the letter post person today.

I've got 3 kids. The youngest is now 18 months old. He was in his cot a few months ago and fell out. He climbed over the side. He's the first one to have done that but the base to the cot was quickly dropped to it's lowest height after that.

My second child, now age 3, was walking just before he was 1 year old. He'd have climbed out of your cot design well before that.

Based on that I would reckon your cot design would do for about 6 months. After that I think a proper cot with higher sides would be required.

I know you've asked about cots but high chairs have had years more use in our house. We got given a nice old one a couple of years back and my middle child 'claimed' it within seconds of seeing it. Just another option for you.

Thanks Mark,

I think I did see something like that on one of the plan websites.

Some overall dimensions of the 'basket' and the height of the pivot point above floor level will be useful.

TIA

Bob

General rule of thumb - if the child can turn over or sit up then it needs to be in a cot, not a crib. Simply because as soon as the little one can sit up or turn over is an indeterminate length of time until they can pull themselves up or stand up. By 6 months you really want them in a cot with an adjustable mattress level.

Did you think about making a cot bed? Would have a longer life and get alot more use - possibly up to the age of 4 years or so depending on the design of it.

That's a good idea - we put ours into their cot-beds straight after the moses basket stage.

They're 5 on Sunday and they still use the same beds.

And when they were small, we got all of them into one bed

I'd agree, lots more use and 'on display' too. It's not such a cute gift but our 2 have trip trap chairs (kind of high chair things) that grow with them. As the 2 small oryx's are the proverbial cobbler's children we bought ours but these would be appreciated for years (but only from when they reach about 6 months old) They have attachments to make them high chairs and then come more like chairs but with higher seats and foot rests.

not wishing to hi-jack but Wizer we anticipate keeping ours until they are 6 or 7 or maybe even older. Perhaps there is time? now they allow our kids to comfortably sit at the dining table with us and eat as a family.

PS are you coming down tomorrow? your delivery is due Monday
