I emailed you earlier Sarah. I hadn't realised you'd ordered, brilliant. I'll be there Monday.

You may be right about the Tripp Trapp. Her current one is too heavy for me to move even without her in it. Not something we took into account when we bought it. She's just about to out grow it and prefers to sit in the normal chairs. But she's not big enough yet so has to kneel which isn't ideal. Making the Tripp Trapp shouldn't be too much work for me and will give me a chance to play with a couple of new toys ;)

I can't stand it when people bang on about WIPs.....

Hi Bob

For boys, the average length at birth is 510mm. The range is as low as 460mm and high as 570mm (sounds like your son is a freak - no offence ). By the time they reach 12 months, average is 760mm, range 690mm to 830mm.

For girls the measurements are approx 10mm shorter at birth, and 20mm shorter at yr1.

HTH.

Cheers

Karl

my boss reckons her daughter about 2ft 4" (at about 15 months) but then margaret, my boss, is a shortie herself so it stands to reason that the daughter would be likewise less than average

the word is also that you should make the cot, crib, whatever longer than the baby because they grow at an astounding rate at that age - and if you make it a snug fit they'll have outgrown it almost before you are finished.

I wonder if I could hijack this thread a little - my wife is pregnant to the tune of 27weeks with our first sproggle, and I've been thinking of building a cot-bed.
We have had a look at various models in the shops, and the only ones that stand out as being a little bit solid are some in the Mamas & Papas range.

TrimTheKing - are your plans for a cot or a cot bed? And if the latter, then would you mind emailing them to me also?

Does anyone else know of a good source for cot bed plans? Preferably something not *too* involved, as I have a couple of other projects on the go also..... Damn that Hal Taylor website!

Cheers,
Adam

Mine is a swinging crib in the style of the pic Bob posted.

We bought our bedroom suite for the baby, Mamas & Papas Ocean range. Very solid indeed, in oak, cot bed will last up to 4 years ish.

8 if I have my way!!! ;)

The finish is a little 'plasticy'. But it's hard wearing. Our daughter is nothing less than a thug ;) and it's holding up fine.

I've just looked, our drawers don't have a finger joint on them?

Yep, the finish did look fairly hard wearing, which has to be a good thing.
The ones we've seen in M&Ps had a drawer front that looked like it had finger joints at the edge, but it was just a fascia, with nowt but air behind the 'fingers'. I'm just not such a huge fan of fakery like that, I'd prefer just the solid timber.
Cheers,
Adam

They must have changed it, ours is just solid timber throughout. It's held together well for the past three years. I had to fettle the drawers a bit as the fronts worked their way loose. But I think that's more because of my wife's tendency to slam them shut ;) For the 'knock-me-sideways' price of that suite, I'm really surprised the drawers are not blum soft close. I reckon for the price you could find a local furniture maker to make it up for you. It's all pretty simple stuff. It's delivered flat pack and a guy puts it all together. I can't remember if that was an extra. I know we haggled with them for a while and they wasn't going to budge, then chucked in some extras. So it may well be worth your while investigating having something made up.

Hey Adam

Not sure whether we have wildly different expectations of finishes, we are looking at different things or M&P have changed their quality since we bought ours but the finish on my Ocean furniture is oil then hard wax and doesn;t look 'thick' or 'plasticky' at all :?

Also doesn't have any finger joints as Tom says, it is all solid timber

Here's a couple of pics of a drawer and wardrobe side showing construction and finish.

Ballet shoes? She can only just walk! Might have to tell the missus about Baby Ballet though, she did ballet when she was a nipper herself so I imagine she would be up for that.

The little pink thing is a piggy finger puppet and the pink mound in the corner is her washing as I moved the washing basket and just threw them on the floor

we recently did a fitted wardrobe to match some mamas and papas furniture in the Ocean Dark oak - we stained it and sprayed lacquer over and it was a good match and not hard to achieve.

The baby ballet thing is great, she's been going since she started walking. It doesn't start as proper ballet, just dancing and stuff.

Ooops. My mistake, having had another look at the M&P website, it was the 'Newhampton' range that had the fakery on it, not the 'Ocean'. Having said that, I don't remember there being too much of a difference between their respective finishes, some of which seemed like a thick coat of B&Q varnish rather than an oiled and waxed one.

Here's a link for the Newhampton range and the fake finger joints....:
