I decided to try my first box in applewood today. I think I'm being over ambitious, as it's 36mm internal diameter and 80mm depth. It's going ok so far, but I can't see a damn thing inside when the scraper's in there! I'm nearly at the bottom, and have yet to attempt to get the inside walls...

Obviously this is kinda area specific, but does anyone have any tips on where to economically buy wood suitable for practicing with? I don't fancy depending on the local B&Q, and don't really know what I'm asking for if I go to a nearby timber yard :oops:

Wow!! Just as well I didn't get time to try it today! As you stand looking at the lathe I've taken off the set screw and washer from the end at the left-hand side of the tailstock and tried tapping the shaft through from left to right, ie. from outboard to inboard on the lathe.

Oh well...I've just been whacking it...I'll try WHACKING it with a mallet and block tomorrow :) I bought it secondhand and have my Jet mini lathe if I go too far and wreck it ;-) Thanks Richard.

Thanks Colin - I hadn't seen that. From reading it apparently the lathe itself is ok, but is let down by the quality of the accessories. That was written over a year ago. Anyone have any updates?
