Record Coronet No0 - replace drive belt

Does anyone have any eaperience with replacing the drive bely on the Record Coronet lathes? I have a no0, but I'd guess they were all the same.

The bottom (motor) spindle is easy enough, but the top one looks like I have to remove the headstock shaft from the headstock bearings to do it?

I've undone the set screw holding the thrust washer in place and tried a gentle tap or two on the end of the shaft with a mallet and wooden block, but it ain't budging an inch, and as the bearings are in a cast body I don't want to hit too hard!

Maybe I'm missing something?

Hi Dave.

If the lathe has two ball races as bearings the shaft should draw out fairly easy.

Don't forget the pulley will be fixed to the spindle shaft, usually with a hexagon head grub screw, and sometimes two screws. One on top of the other.

B*gger, then it's well and truly stuck. It didn't budge as much as a gnats whisker when I was tapping it with mallet and wooden block :-(

Hi Dave,

I once replaced a belt on my little CCSL (now used as a demo lathe) and after carefully making sure ALL grub screws are removed you do really have to whack (does Whack/Wack have an "H"??? ) it with a large mallet!!!

My Dad helped me do it and I was slightly concerned about how he was persuading it to come out (with said large mallet) but it is the only way and all worked fine afterward. I'm sure any engineers on here will offer advice about removing spindles from bearings etc.

Oh well...I've just been whacking it...I'll try WHACKING it with a mallet and block tomorrow

I bought it secondhand and have my Jet mini lathe if I go too far and wreck it ;-)

Possibly grandmothers and eggs again, but which way are you trying to get it out? On the Coronet lathes with bronze bearings nearest the threaded end, they only come out "forwards" (i.e., towards the tailstock) and trying to push it the other way doesn't do the bearing any good .
Also double-check that you have taken <all> the grub screws right out of the pulley, not just slackened them.

Wow!! Just as well I didn't get time to try it today!

As you stand looking at the lathe I've taken off the set screw and washer from the end at the left-hand side of the tailstock and tried tapping the shaft through from left to right, ie. from outboard to inboard on the lathe.
