    Compressor problem

I drain the tank after each session to stop water building up in the tank and causing corrosion. I'm not sure what you mean about setting the pressure correctly. The compressor used to run until the tank pressure guage showed about 110 psi, then cut out. The only control I have is over the...

Cutlist seems to have been priced...

That is what I have done if I run out of parts. Cutlist lets you keep track of of-cuts so you still get efficient use of materials. You can also combine projects but I think you still run into the 50 parts limit.

    Trouble with Bandsaw

I know blade tension is critical on a band saw but it is also possible to over tension them. Mark Duginske has some good illustrations of bent and broken tensioners in his band saw book. As Brian says, getting a higher spec part made might be a cost effective solution. BTW Dragon Saws are also a...

    Compressor problem

I'm having a problem with my cheapo compressor. In use, it cuts in to refill the tank but then won't switch off again until it blows the over-pressure safety valve. I remember reading some good compressor advice on the forum in the past, but I can't find it again. The compressor is a 24L...

Cutlist seems to have been priced...

When I got the silver edition a couple of years ago it cost just over £20, so it has jumped in price a fair bit. That said, if you do a bit of work with sheet goods it will plan all the cuts automatically and print labels for the parts too. I easily recouped the cost when re-fitting my kitchen...

    Chainsaw mill??

For hand resawing you need a frame saw. Your boards are very wide, so the frame saw would need to be huge and it would be tremendously hard work.

    Old Chisels

This post by our old chum Alf shows how to make a non-turned chisel handle with little more than a drill and a block plane. I've made a couple of handles by this method and it really is very easy. The hardest part, for me anyway, is to get the hole for the tang perfectly aligned.

Is a plane really worth this much

Me too. Personally I don't see the point in collecting tools that will only ever sit in a display cabinet but at the end of the day the value of an item is what someone is prepared to pay for it...just look at Damien Hirst's recent sale.

Spot on Wizer, a picture paints a thousand words.

    more old wood planes

Nice contrast to see the old coffin smoothers set against the Festool systainers. The iron on one of the smoothers looks like it has been set using a sledge hammer. Sorry, I don't mean to be critical, especially as you are generous enough to give them away foc. These old planes are great tools...

Making a laminated plywood table top

If you do want to have the ply edging on show you will need to use good quality birch ply with no voids. It is possible to get a pretty smooth finish and a few coats of polyurethane varnish will seal it nicely. As for the laminate, you don't need a vacuum press. You need to get a sheet of high...

    Good book on Routers...

I'd second the books by Bill Hylton. I have Woodworking with the Router, which he produced with Fred Matlack. It has loads of good practical stuff in it including detailed plans for building your own router tables (horizontal and vertical...see the other thread on horizontal RTs). I have built...

    K-bodies discounted

I got a set of the Axminster ones (600 mm) when thy ran a promotion last year. They went straight back as the sliding head wouldn't grip on the bar. To be fair to Axminster, they sent out replacement parts, even after the clamps had been returned, so I think the problem is sorted out now...

    Trtions Don't Bounce!

Bad luck mate, that is a real sickener. If you can find one of the B&Q £99 deals that have been posted on the forum regularly, I'd be tempted to go for a new one. If not Triton Tools is about the best I've found for parts and complete tools.

    Tensioner for plantation shutters

The threaded nut inserts are threaded but the top few mm is a hex socket for screwing it into your workpiece.

    Whats your day job?

I'm a biologist working in a veterinary research institute, trying to find cures for farm animal diseases. Although not in IT, I do seem to spend a fair part of my day looking at a computer screen (including the odd peek at this forum  ).

    Tensioner for plantation shutters

From your picture it looks like these are what you are after, though it is hard to judge the scale from the picture.

    Spindle taper on pillar drills

According to the latest Axminster catalogue (p544) the female Morse taper is 12 mm wide at its widest point, MT2 = 18 mm and MT3 = 24 mm.

    E Book Reader

I don't know anything about E-Book readers but if you want lots of free ebooks to download, have a look at Project Gutenberg. All the content is out of copyright or made freely available by the authors/publishers, so not the latest thrillers etc, but there is some great stuff in there.

    Is Isopropyl alcohol acid free?

You could try and get hold of some pH indicator paper or even a soil acidity test kit from a garden centre. It wouldn't be particularly accurate but all you need to know is if the pH is acid, neutral or alkaline.
