Cutlist seems to have been priced...

I use a free app call Optimik. But that only does 30 parts. I have thought about going for cutlist for ages. I think next time I have a large sheet project, I will.

Sorry Matt, don't understand what you're getting at.

Cutlist is a popular piece of software for helping with layouts and ordering stock. You can set up a number of parts per project so, for example, if you were making a chest of drawers you would want to list all the component parts. If you buy the £50 version you're limited to 50 parts. That's probably just about OK for a chest of drawers but there remains a risk that you may exhaust your allowance. The next version up, with unlimited parts costs about 3x as much.

Thanks for the tip off. Optimik seems to only do sheet materials. I'm after something that does timber too.

When I got the silver edition a couple of years ago it cost just over £20, so it has jumped in price a fair bit. That said, if you do a bit of work with sheet goods it will plan all the cuts automatically and print labels for the parts too. I easily recouped the cost when re-fitting my kitchen by making efficient use of materials and of course I knew in advance exactly how many sheets of MFC to order for the cabinets. I made MDF frame and panel doors and it was easy to plan that out too.

So is the work-around to split the project into sections and combine the parts list ie. in the chest of drawers example, have the main frame in one project and the drawers in another?

That is what I have done if I run out of parts. Cutlist lets you keep track of of-cuts so you still get efficient use of materials. You can also combine projects but I think you still run into the 50 parts limit.
