    MDF built-in question

Not sure I fully understand you. :? If you have 15mm sheets then a good biscuit joint , a rub down and some good quality primer will probably leave you with a cleaner joint than if you overfill and don't sand it back perfectly. Cheers Tim

Painting the machined edges of MDF

I've used wall paper paste in the past to good effect. However the trick is as Jason says in the link above to use the densest MDF you can. MR MDF is definitely the way to go. Cheers Tim

    MDF built-in question

What thickness are you talking about? Anything over 12mm can be made pretty seamless with some careful biscuit jointing. Scrit's point is the most valid one ie design it out or hide it. Have you got a design image that you could post so that we can see if there is a possibility of...

    Jigsaw Advice

If you can find the extra notes then my vote is also with the Bosch. Very reliable and very accurate - a pleasure to use and seems to be as tough as old boots. Cheers Tim

    Ladder construction

Andy They already have something similar which is fine for the cabinets on the gallery and in the study next door but its the higher shelves on the cabinets between the windows which are 14ft off the ground (think first floor window!). Stepladders are fine but at that size would be absolutely...

    Ladder construction

Thanks for the advice - helpful stuff as always. Is there something I'm missing here? Good thinking but the cabs on the walkway need a couple of steps to get up to the top shelves so they would need to be taller than that - the upper part of the tall cab is just under 10 ft high! I think...

How much will a new workshop cost????

My one is 6.5m x 4.8m and cost roughly £5.5k for materials inc internal finish eg plasterboarding (not skimmed) and electrics. There are two more 1220mm windows on the other side and one more on the end plus a couple of veluxes. Construction is 2x4. HTH Cheers Tim

    Ladder construction

I have been asked to make a pair of ladders for my library clients (now becoming a job for life). By my calculations they need to be 3m long and probably 400mm wide. I plan to use step treads rather than rungs because they will be more pleasant to stand on. They will be free hung rather...

    Workshop pics

Looks very well organised. Only criticism/ suggestion i'd offer is that I'd turn the air filter round by 90 degrees though since the exhaust is pointing straight at the wall. it would be a lot more efficient that way. Cheers Tim

    Funny Name....

I can't believe I forgot this one - I shared a house with a guy called Paul Christmas when i moved to London. He used to call his dad 'Father' but his uncle Terry married a girl called Mary Day. They had a Christmas / Day wedding and she obviously became Mary Christmas. Really - I swear thats...

    curved unit

I would agree with this that several have suggested - the difficulty will be making it 'clean' enough to not look like MDF. I find that its really tricky to get rid of the rough look esp on curves even with MR MDF. Cheers Tim

    SelfAdhesive Velvet

    Rubbish service from AXMINSTER

I'd definitely get on the blower - I always find them incredibly helpful. However I do think that their IT is pretty suspect. I often get despatch confirmation emails that then don't tally to the account info (ie it says order received not despatched) or get asked for random passwords when...

    Efficiency between workshop and site

Thanks for the responses guys. I should have been a bit more clear - I don't have a van. I'm probably on site 15% of the time (max) so it doesn't make sense to have one plus jobs change so dramatically in size/ scale that it makes more sense to rent as required. My request is more about...

    Funny Name....

I used to work with a Lieutenant Death. Everyone hoped he would make Admiral or at the very least Captain. My mum's best friend at school was Theresa Green.....and she worked with a consultant call Onions who insisted on it being pronounced O' Nions. :D Cheers

    Efficiency between workshop and site

Thats the conclusion I'm coming to. I have several systainers for non Festool stuff just because of the ease of transport. I know they offer one with a hand tool inner - maybe I should make one for all the bits etc or you do what I do and end up taking everything and then remember that the...

    Efficiency between workshop and site

I spend most of my working time in my workshop but have to go to sites (usually domestic houses) to install work. I am pretty good at moving all the bigger stuff eg DX, powertools, worktables in fact anything other than the smallest but most necessary bits of kit from drill bits to screws. My...

    New Router advice

I have a 1400. It has a lot of plus points eg - its DX is unbelievably effective, its is braked so cutters stop within a couple of seconds (very useful if you have long cutters protruding etc) and its very well made. I do have some gripes about it though - it is one of the only festool...
