Solid wood worktop joints, to glue or not to glue?....

Silicone bead along top edge as said. But still seal whole end grain for a belt and braces job

    Landrover owners - advice

Yup, my '57 pickup is still chugging along - sounds like a bag of spanners with flatulence but ain't she beautiful! :D (She is Chassis No. 88/1 - the first pre-pro. 88")

    Concorde memories

A less well known aspect of Concorde was the Lifetime Heat Fatigue Static Test facility at RAE Farnborough. Through the hard-learned lessons of the Comet tragedy, British Aerospace built what was then the world's most complex testing system for a complete airframe, a vast complex machine the...

    Limp Mode

By far the most common cause is a split air hose. Does it produce a lot of (black) smoke when you accelerate?.

Table saw vs. rail guided plunge saw

I recently got to use a plunge saw (a Makita with extra rail on offer from Axi) and it was a revelation. What a brilliant bit of kit! I rate it as an extremely useful and competent tool and it is ideal for cutting flat stock. The table saw though, I think is unmatched by any other tool in...

    axminster biscuit jointer

Use mine a fair bit. Fence adjustment is pretty awful but once that is set, otherwise it does exactly what it says very well.

    Fox router table on offer

That price is less than I paid 8 years ago for my version of this table. As it comes the hold downs are crap, the cross fence is ***** and the table thickness as mentioned necesitates one of those bloody awful, useless collet extensions. However with a little ingenuity and very little money...

    Fox Sliding Compound Saw

Wow, this post has legs! From memory, yes Brendan, I think the depth stop is very basic. Ike

Breathable membrane in rain? / Strength of manmade slates

Those man-made slates are as tough as old boots. Strong enough to walk on.

    Best choice for the leigh

Definitly go for the extra power. In my experience, go for the 1400W. I found my T5 (850W) on the Leigh didn't have anything like enough power for hardwood (beech). I bought the Bosch twin set (1400W) and it munches easily on oak, beech etc. I suspect you would end up working a 1000W machine...

    HItachi router; any good?

Hitachi are industrial-quality power tools. Their motors are their own and everything is high quality. I have an M12V (1850W - powerful enough for anything IMO) and its ancestor the TR12, along with several other Hitachi tools. No gimmicky features - just simple, but very long-lived...

    switching electricity suppliers

I'm with Alantic E&G. They stay generally competitive, although I suspect they could have reduced their prices a bit more over the last year. Simply a no-nonsense company with excellent customer service, and that's why I shall stay with them. Ike

Lead acid battery for bike lights help?

Is it for Cateye Double Daylights? If so its a 2.5mm socket you need. Maplins should have them. I found the plug lead works loose occasionally. Try giving it a wiggle anyway. cheers, ike

    velux windows

Don't laugh - but Velux themselves online! . Everyone else are just resellers anyway. I found resellers pricing tends towards swings and roundabouts. In any event if you buy direct from Velux, you're getting Velux service, which is good. Just Google Velux

    Mortice chisels, which sizes ?

A 3/8" and a 1/2" will do for the vast majority of projects. Don't be tempted to buy a cheap set. Quality, not quantity is what counts. A good comprise are the Axminster Japanese-made chisels in the £20-25 range. PS If you already have any Chinese ones- just scrap them.

    Tewkesbury Saw Co

Tewkesbury Saw are a good outfit. They welcome everyone from industrial customers to Joe Average. They offer a decent price sharpening service. Highly recommended.

Why No Planer Thicknesser / Saw Combination machines ?

I've always thought combis are an expensive solution compared to separates. Although I think the Bestcombi 2000 is one of the best value offerings for the DIY/home user. How many home workshops can allow 5m x 5m just for one machine?
