    European Oak Serving Tray

Another thought - which way will the boards run for the base? Most boards I've seen have the boards running the length of the tray but, it could be more economical to have them spanning the width - also, the shorter lengths would be less inclined to sag under load... Expansion is possibly more...

Dust Extraction options for a SCMS

Oh, and if extraction on the saw isn't great, you could try adding one of those deflector/cowls that Steve made for his Bosch. They do make a difference. :)

Dust Extraction options for a SCMS

I was going to suggest those heat-shrink fittings, if you're content with connecting the hose directly to the saw (not that I've used them)... But, I think the best solution would be to enclose the back of the saw (you don't have any rails to worry about! :P) and perhaps run a 100mm connection...

    Stool from Offcuts

Yeah, it's not always easy knowing which wood to work with... Is there anything you haven't worked with and would like to try? Would it be suitable for your chair? If you're also planning to do lots of shaped work, you'll want something that has stability and strong grain (which can mean open as...

new toy - sealey drill press

Looks like a good buy, Pete. I wouldn't bother putting that guard on though - they really are more hassle than they're worth!! :D

    Stool from Offcuts

Nice stool. I really like how you've transformed a defect in to a continuous feature. Much nicer than the average round plug! Shame there are no before photos of the knot. Your dovetail joints also look excellent. At college, I'm making a chair at the moment and know how easy it isn't to...

    European Oak Serving Tray

Nah, that just means you need a decent mitre saw!! :D I guess the mitre gauge is a little sloppy? So many are. Maybe you'd have been better off building a jig that runs in the track? You've got the right idea, though  Your new lighting really makes a huge difference! 8) Will you be...

Jet, Performax and Axminster Drum Sanders ???????

Axminster's Senior model pops up on eBay quite frequently. I doubt that's a bad thing but I reckon you stand a good chance of saving a few hundred, there, even with the additional courier costs. For what it's worth, the Festool Domino alone would cost just over £600 but you'd then need to spend...

    Cleaning up glue squeeze out

With PVAs, I prefer to leave it until the excess feels rubbery - at which point, you can quite easily pick it off with a chisel. Whenever I try to wipe the wet glue away with a damp rag, I seem to end up making more of a mess! Particularly with Titebond, which I find is more 'runny' than most...

Is it worth insulating a workshop for 2 evenings a week?

If you're worried about spending too much money then I think you should look at draught-proofing, first of all. Sealing any gaps around the main door, window(s) and around the eaves where the roofing sheets meet the wall plates on top of the walls (expanding foam is great for this) - that should...

uk oak - nice timber, good prices, shame about the service

One thing you may not be aware of is that treated timber must be left alone for forty-eight hours after treatment so that any excess chemicals can soak in or drain off. It's a health and safety thing but it could (in your case!) account for why they haven't yet gotten back to you (fingers...

Daft Building Reg noise in workshop proposals

EDIT - the more replies this thread gets, the more people who haven't yet clicked it will take it seriously!!

Daft Building Reg noise in workshop proposals

Good one, Rog! Got me as well! :D I'm fortunate that I can do most of my machining during the week, meaning the noise I make at weekends is minimal. Even if you don't have that luxury, I think it pays to do any planing or thicknessing (for example) in shorter bursts, wherever possible...

uk oak - nice timber, good prices, shame about the service

Sounds a lot like a company I used to work for... :? Sorry to hear you've had such a frustrating experience, Pete (although, I'm sure that F-word doesn't even half cover it...). £9 for an 8' 4"x4" in oak??? That is bloody cheap though!!

    European Oak Serving Tray

Than sounds very similar to what I have in mind - which is basically inspired by Norm's way of cutting a cornice; "place the moulding on the saw as it will appear on the finished job...". My idea was to plane up a length of 2in scrap and bevel one edge (say, 10°). Place this against my mitre saw...

Axminster bandsaw Good or bad buy?

I've worked with one of these (unconventionally...) and they're rather solid and reliable, considering their size. Theirs more to this model than your average 14in bandsaw, that's for sure. Great price, too. :)

    Axminster Powertool Centre

I had a similar experience with Screwfix once... Bought a cheap biscuit jointer from them but something wasn't right. They arranged to send a replacement and to have the old one collected next day... The courier never showed up but the replacement came via. Royal Mail - so, I sold the old one...

    European Oak Serving Tray

Sorry, Chems. I didn't mean to imply that your photos were of poor quality. Don't worry, I have taken and seen much worse!! I was merely wondering how you can put up with the frustration of 'losing' the WIP photos that we all love - this isn't the first time, is it? You'd be...

A labour of love - bringing an old saw back to life.

Fantastic work on both counts! I'm intrigued by the recess for your index finger... Like the thinking but, does it really make a difference? Is it more comfortable?

    European Oak Serving Tray

...Erm, what about your phone then??? :D I've had a Fuji F50 for two-years now - I've covered it in glue, sawdust, even Danish oil and it still takes a decent photo. A real bargain for £150! 8) I had a £100 Mustek before that and it didn't last long at all... Load of *****! :? Lighting is the...
